This is a beginner's guide to Monster Hunter Stories 3 (MHS3). Learn how to get started as well as some tips and tricks for new players here!

The combat system mainly revolves around the three attack types: Power, Technical, and Speed, with each type losing to one and winning against another. You can use regular attack or Skills that fall under these three attack types.
In battle, you will be joined by one of your Monsties along with a Battle Ally and their partner Monstie. While you only have full control of your character, you can command your Monstie to use Skills with different attack types as well. Monster Hunter Stories 3 also has various combat mechanics, such as Synchro Rush, that helps you deal a lot of damage in battle.
Combat System Guide: How to Win Battles

When you or a member of your party and one opposing Monster use an attack or Skill with an attack type against each other, a Head-to-Head occurs, letting the winner deal more damage to the loser. Learning a Monster's attack type ensures you stay undefeated in Head-to-Heads.
All Monster Weaknesses and Attack Types

By opening the status screen in battle, you can glean information on opposing Monsters such as weaknessses as well as whether the Monster is Normal, Enranged, or in a certain form. An enranged Monster will use a different attack type compared to their normal form, so constantly look at the status screen to know which form a Monster is in.

By reducing a Monster's Wyvernsoul Gauge to zero, you can topple the opponent, giving you a free turn where the opposing Monster can't move and allowing you to deal guaranteed critical hits. Upon toppling, you are also prompted to use a Synchro Rush, which can help you deal tons of damage when you run out of stamina.

Some monsters can be hit in different body parts, with each body part being weak to a certain damage type. Destroying body parts have different effects, such as reducing a Monster's Wyvernsoul Gauge as well as netting you more Monster Material upon victory.

It is advisable to bring Monsties that cover all three attack types. This allows you to win each Head-to-Head once you understand which attack type an opposing Monster will use.
List of All Monsties (Monster List)

Feral Monsters are powerful variants of Monsters that can use Feral Attacks. Defeating them unlocks a Camp in the area where they were defeated.
Camps let you craft and upgrade equipment, access the Stables and the Catavan Stand, cook food, and most importantly, unlock Habitat Restoration for that area.

Habitat Restoration is used to restore the population of Endangered Monsters as well as Monsters that are native to the area. Raising a Monster's Ecosystem Rank can give their Monster Eggs an additional element based on the habitat and spawn the Monster in the area to farm for materials.
Habitat Restoration Guide: How to Restore Habitats

To fill your party of Monsties up, you must gather eggs from Monster Dens. Most random dens will contain random eggs of Monsters native to the area and Monsters in the habitat's Restoration Slots, so you can find eggs of Endangered Species in Dens as well.

You and your Monsties cannot level up when repeatedly facing weaker Monsters, so farm XP by defeating Barrel Felynes instead. They sometimes appear as strange phenomena in Monster Dens, and have high defense with a high chance of fleeing. Use attacks with fixed damage to bypass their sturdy defense stat.

Rite of Channeling allows you to transfer Monstie skills, also known as Genes, from one Monstie to another. If you want your best Monsties to have the best Skills, then you can use Rite of Channeling to optimize your Monstie.

Side Stories allow you to learn more about each of your Battle Allies and progress their story, but more importantly, completing them gives you various rewards, such as important recipes for items used in combat.

Once you unlock camps, you also get access to the Ranger Mess, allowing you to cook food that provide benefits depending on the dish, such as additional starting stamina or additional EXP gain.

Rather than slowly exploring each area to complete your map, find the different lookout points as the Felyne on top of the tower will automatically reveal the nearby area, and you can view and mark the nearby landmarks as well.

Materials are needed for crafting, cooking, and combining, so you should interact with every gathering spot you encounter and collect materials as much as possible.

Catavan Stands let you save your progress and traverse areas quickly through Fast Travel. You can also use them to change the time to night, which is when Invasive Monsters can be battled and strange phenomena are more likely to appear in Monster Dens.

Some Monsters have Mutations, which are stronger than their regular counterparts. These mutations are triggered through Habitat Restoration, and the eggs of these Mutations will appear in Monster Dens within the Habitat Restoration area as well.
List of Mutated Monsties: All Mutations

If a Monster Egg is very potent or highly potent, they will hatch with an Egg Skill, which are powerful Skills that deal a lot of damage or provide important buffs to your party.
Egg Skills Explained

One of the strongest egg skills is Solar Cry, which is a skill that fills the Kinship Gauge. This allows you to use Kinship Skills more often to skip an opposing Monster's turn. You can get Solar Cry by finding a high potency egg of a Rank 7 Monster in a Non-Elemental Habitat.

When using Habitat Restoration, release Monsters with Elements that are the same as the area element of the Habitat. Doing so will give their eggs the same primary and secondary element. This lets Monsties deal more damage when they use an attack of the same element.
For instance, a Dual-Fire Pink Rathian will deal even more damage when using Flare Cluster compared to a regular Pink Rathian.

High Potency Monster Eggs are better than normal Eggs as the Monsties acquire better genes as well as Egg Skills, and you can farm for rare eggs by raising a Monster's Ecosystem Rank and by searching in Rare Dens.

Double Attacks occur when you or your partner Monstie wins a Head-to-Head while you are both attacking the same Monster. Try to trigger Double Attacks whenever you can as this also skips the opposing Monster's turn.

Snce using a Kinship Skill skips an opponent's turn, using yours separately from your Battle Ally's Kinship Skill will allow you to deny more turns from an opposing monster. Instead, use Double Kinship Skills to finish off an opponent as it deals a lot of damage.

If you're stuck in an area without a Monstie that can climb walls, such as Tobi-Kadachi, your character can actually climb walls themselves. However, traversal may be slow, and it's advisable to always bring a Monster with Wall Climb instead.
