Genes are the monstie skills that provide active and passive abilities during combat in Monster Hunter Stories 3 (MHS3). See a list of all the genes in the game and how to use them.

A monstie's genes are its abilities that it uses during combat. They can be passive or active, and they have designated attack types and elements.

To create a powerful monstie, you can customize their abilities by giving them specific genes that synergize well with each other.
Genes can be transfered from one monstie to another using the Rite of Channeling feature. Basically, you'll take one gene from a monstie you possess, and pass it on to another, filling in one of the latter monstie's gene slots.
Rite of Channeling can be unlocked after completing the Tracks main quest in Azuria.

Egg Skills are acquired by Monsties if the egg that they hatched from were either very potent or highly potent. When gathering eggs, an egg will shine gold if it is very potent, and will shine with multiple colors if it is highly potent.
The Egg Skill a Monstie acquires depends on the Area Element of the Habitat where it was restored and its monstie rank.

You can get Monsters with better genes by gathering rare eggs. Rare eggs can be found in rare monster dens.
Additionally, through Habitat Restoration, you can increase the ecosystem rank of monsties to find rare versions of their eggs in Monster Dens within the area where you're restoring them.
