How to Unlock Partners

Progress the Main Story

Unlock Partners by Progressing the Main Quest
Players can unlock these partners to battle alongside them when they reach certain points in the main quest such as when the Protagonist heads out for the inaugural exploration for Thea.

In addition to this, character partners may also gain new companions during their respective side stories.

Note that Eleanor and her companion Angie are unlocked much later compared to the rest of the Rangers.

Partner Battle Mechanics

Switch Out Partners in the Party Menu

Switch Out Partners
To switch out partners navigate to the party menu and follow the command on the bottom right. It should show the selection for Change Battle Allies. This will take you to a screen that shows all of the different partners you can switch to as well as their respective stats.

Note that this will only be unlocked after defeating the Feral Chatacabra in the Feral Monster main quest.

Change Allies' Battle Strategy in the Partners' Menu

Change Allies
To access the partners' menu, head to the Change Battle Allies option in the party menu. Once there, on the top left of this screen, players can change the allies' battle strategy which includes, Prioritize Same Monster, Prioritize Different Monster, Large First, Small First and Battle Allies' Choice.

Note that this is the only way you can input instructions to your ally as you cannot command character partners and their monsties.

Limit of 6 Monsties in Your Personal Roster

On the other hand, the protagonist can select 6 different monsties in their own roster of monsters that they command. Players can adjust these 6 at the stables in Azuria Kingdom.

Battle Allies and Fellow Rangers

In Monster Hunter Stories 3, the protagonist is a captain of a group of rangers who are tasked with researching and preserving the surrounding ecosystem. These rangers and their own partner monsties accompany the protagonist as they investigate the strange phenomena affecting the land.

In addition, these partners also serve as battle allies, aiding the protagonist when fighting monsties on the field. Players will have to strategize each partners' unique skill roster and combat style in order to adapt to the different kinds of monsters they will face.
