Go for Headshots with the Mk22

Use the MK22 tranquilizer pistol to wear down The Pain's stamina. Aim for headshots to deplete the stamina bar faster. On higher difficulties, you'll have to always aim for headshots if you want to maximize what little Mk22 ammo you have.

Break the Bee Shield with Grenades

To break The Pain’s bee shield, use Stun Grenades or Smoke Grenades. Smoke Grenades are the most reliable option, as they immediately make him cough and leave him open to attacks.

Stun Grenades and other explosives can also work, but usually require two hits to fully clear the shield.

Tip: Avoid throwing grenades while the hornets are still swarming the Pain. Even if the shield is partially destroyed, the bees can catch your grenades and toss them back at you.

Use the M37 Shotgun as an Alternative to Break the Shield

An M37 shotgun blast can also tear down the bee shield. On Normal, just two shots are enough, but on Extreme, it can take up to four. Since shotgun ammo is limited, consider this method carefully if you’re aiming for a stamina-based win.

Defeating The Pain non-lethally unlocks the Hornet Stripe Camo, a uniform patterned with yellow and black colors to resemble a hornet. It reduces getting detected by hornets, leeches and other insects.
