Metal Gear Solid Delta The Fear Boss Guide

The Fear is the third boss you fight in Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater (MGS3 Remake). Read on to learn how to beat The Fear in Graniny Gorki South, including tips for getting a non-lethal boss kill, missable collectibles you can get in his arena, and rewards for beating him.

Cure Snake at the Start of the Fight

The Fear will launch a poisoned crossbow bolt at you during the cutscene before the boss fight. Once the fight starts, hop into the Cure menu and cure both the poison and the crossbow bolt so that your HP can passively regen.

Use the Thermal Goggles to Find the Fear

During the fight, The Fear will be using his own version of the Stealth Camouflage. To see where he is at any given time, use your Thermal Goggles to hone in on his heat signature.

If you have it available, make sure to also wear the Flecktarn camo since it gives you unlimited battery while using the thermals.

Keep Shooting The Fear to Stop Crossbow Spam

To stop The Fear from spamming his crossbow shots, make sure to always keep up the pressure during the fight. Track him using the Thermal Goggles and always shoot him once he's stationary. This is very important on Extreme, since a single crossbow shot can bring you down to critical health.

However, if it does end up that you lose track of him, start moving around the middle of the arena in circles. If you hear a voiceline, it usually means he's about to fire. Dodge roll or run in circles to avoid getting hit.

Old MGS3 Non-Lethal One-Shot Strats No Longer Work

In the original MGS3, there were quite a few ways to get quick non-lethal takedowns of The Fear. However, these no longer work in MGS Delta. Some examples that no longer work are:

  • AK-47 and Stun Grenade Combo: Before, you could use a Stun Grenade on the Fear before unloading your AK-47 to fully deplete his stamina in a matter of seconds. This no longer works.
  • Fake Death Pill into Trap Trigger: Before, you could use the traps in the arena to one-shot the Fear. However, in MGS Delta, this no longer works since The Fear only takes a bit of damage before he ultimately runs off and resumes hiding in the trees.

Roll Into the Fear When He Tries Eating

If you're trying for a non-lethal kill, The Fear will eventually leave the trees (usually at half or 1/4th stamina bar) in order to grab a bite from the forest floor. When he does this, roll into him in order to stun him away from his meal.

Note: Failing to stop him from replenishing his stamina on Extreme is an instant reset. You'll have limited Mk22 ammo, so you're better off restarting the fight if he manages to get a bite in.

For non-lethal takedowns, your only real option is the Mk22. However, for lethal kills, the AK-47 and XM16E1 both work really well since you can just spam shots to knock The Fear out of his crossbow animation. Aside from those choices, the Thermal Goggles are a must in order to see the boss during the fight.

Defeating the Fear non-lethally will reward you with the Spider Camouflage. When equipped, it raises your camo index by a lot but at the cost of continuously draining your stamina.

Head over to the exit of the area to the north. Before you climb up the ledge leading to the exit, look to your left (west). The Kerotan will be on the branch of the nearby tree. Possible to get this before or after The Fear boss fight.

Found camouflaged on top of a tree at the center of the arena. Can be easily spotted by climbing the tree at the southeast section of the arena. Can be obtained before or after The Fear boss fight.
