For non-hardcore players, the FOXHOUND rank is definitely doable. However, it does require some preparation. Before attempting a run, make sure you've at least finished the game once and have access to all camos. Some of the more important ones include:
Unlike the Stealth Camo, the AT-Camouflage ghillie suit isn't considered a special item. This means that if you've unlocked it by finding all 64 GA-KOs, you can use it during a run and it won't invalidate your FOXHOUND ranking.
How to Unlock AT-Camouflage (Ghillie Suit)
Unfortunately, FOXHOUND means finishing the game with 0 human kills; this includes bosses. That means, you'll have to learn how to non-lethal every single boss in the game, which can prove tricky for some since you have less ammo to work with on Extreme and European Extreme. Here are a few strategies for each of the bosses in the game:
| Boss | Non-Lethal Kill Tips |
|---|---|
| The Pain | Learn all the ammo drop locations in the cave. You'll run out of M37 and Mk22 ammo mid-fight even when it's going well, so you'll want to know how to get to and from each platform to safely resupply. |
| The Fear | Dodge roll into him whenever he comes down from his tree to grab a bite. If he manages to replenish his stamina, just reset the fight. |
| The End | Learn how to hound him when he switches sniping positions as well as how to shoot him as he moves to maximize your stamina damage. |
| The Fury | Learn how to quickscope with the Mosin Nagant so you can knock him out in four, 3-shot salvos. |
| The Sorrow | Skip his fight by drowning yourself then using the Revival Pill. Saves on time and saves on sanity. |
| Volgin | Learn the CQC Throw into dodge roll combo to deal stamina damage easily. Then, learn how to duck under each of his moves to make the fight a breeze. |
| Shagohod | This one is all about learning how to quick reload the RPG-7. During the second phase, learn to stunlock the Shagohod by firing an RPG at its treads whenever it starts moving. |
| The Boss | Learn how to parry her first CQC attack, then simply kite her around the arena while headshotting her with the Mosin Nagant for a quick stamina kill. |
While continues and manual saves may be limited, reloading autosaves are not. If you trigger an alert, take too much damage, or think you can path through an area more efficiently, then simply reload your autosave to make it all go away.
Loot is essential during the early game since you'll quickly find yourself running low on things like Mk22 ammo (especially if you like knocking out guards between boss fights). To make sure you aren't caught flat-footed midway through a run, learn where to resupply before each boss fight.
Story Walkthrough and Area Loot Maps
Multiple locations in the game can be easily bypassed by simply running through the patrol route holes of the enemies. Not only does this save time, it also saves you from having to re-loot ammo.
This goes doubly so for sections where you get forced Caution phases. If you know how to skip these easily via routing, then most of the run will be a breeze.

If you haven't already unlocked these items, earning a FOXHOUND rank will grant you access to the EZ Gun, Stealth Camo, and Infinity Face Paint. All of these will be available to use in your next NG and NG+ run.

Naturally, earning a FOXHOUND rank nets you the gold trophy, FOXHOUND. This is one of the harder achievements to get but the pay-off is well worth it on the way to that platinum trophy.
