In addition to Kirby, King Dedede, and Meta Knight, 18 new characters were added in Kirby Air Riders! Some characters are locked behind Checklist missions, and players can choose which characters to use when starting a race.

Alternate Skins for All Characters
All characters also have at least one alternate skin that can be unlocked through Checklist missions! In addition to skins, players can also collect Headwear accessories that can be put on any character they want.

Special Abilities
Each character in Kirby Air Riders have their own Special, an ability and mechanic newly added to the game. The Special charges naturally through the race and can be activated with a dedicated button once fully charged!
Alternate Abilities for Kirby's Skins
Unlike all other characters, Kirby's alternate skins each have their own alternate Special
New Machines
10 new machines were added in Kirby Air Riders, with the machine types split between Chariots and Stars. All machines in the Kirby Air Ride game are still included in the roster, and machines can now be paired with any Rider you want!
Flight Warpstar was also renamed to Flight Warp Star, and is still exclusive to City Trial's Free Run mode.

New Mode: Road Trip
Road Trip is an entirely new game mode introduced in Kirby Air Riders. This is a story-like mode where you will encounter different characters and scenarios while progressing stages.

New Online Features
Kirby Air Riders also introduced the Connect menu which lets players from all over the world play together online! This feature requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, and gives access to online matches, the Paddock, and the Machine Market!
Multiplayer Guide and All Online Features
Collectibles and Cosmetics
New collectibles that players can unlock like Gummies, and cosmetics like machine parts, and license decoration have also been added to Kirby Air Riders, giving players even more to look forward to!

Returning Game Modes
Air Ride, Top Ride, and City Trial have all been given revamps in terms of new characters, machines, and courses in the game. Each game mode also has adjustable settings called Rules that can further customize your gameplay!
Returning Items and Abilities
Most items and Abilities from the previous game have been retained, usable by all the playable characters. The different Boxes in City Trial have been adjusted, as well.

All Kirby Air Ride courses have been added to Kirby Air Riders, as well, with visuals and settings updated appropriately.

The Checklist has also been improved and expanded, adding more achievements for players to strive for!
Local Multiplayer and Splitscreen
The Local Multiplayer and Splitscreen function has also been retained in Kirby Air Riders, with the option to adjust the 2-player Splitscreen
Removed Features in Kirby Air Riders
Top Ride Machine Limits
The Steer Star and Free Star machines have been retired from the game, replaced with Steer Control and Free Control modes that can be used regardless of which machine you choose.
Old Top Ride Courses
All of the old Top Ride courses were either completely revamped or removed entirely from the available Top Ride courses in Kirby Air Riders. This was done to improve the overall game experience and allow for the new 8 player limit.
