Kirby Air Riders have different modes; Air Ride, Top Ride, City Trial, and Road Trip. Each mode has its own set of courses and stadiums.
Every Machine and Rider Combo have their own strengths and weaknesses, so it's best to consider which course or stadium you'll be entering when choosing your Combo!

The main button used in the course is the Boost Charge, which you press and hold to charge up.
This is best utilized in tight turns, where you charge up the Boost while tilting the stick to make your Rider start drifting along the curve. When the Boost Charge is released, it will shoot the player forward in a burst of speed!

Each Rider has their own Special that automatically charges up and can then be used at any point in the game. Depending on the Rider, the Special move can be for dealing damage to enemies and competitors, or boosting speed for a short duration.
Damage-oriented Specials are best used around crowded areas while speed-related Specials are best for overtaking or getting ahead of the competition. Familiarize yourself with your Rider's Special move so you can use it at the best opportunity!

Courses will also have randomly placed Copy Hats and Ability items up for grabs, which any Rider can use! These items can give offensive or defensive abilities depending on its type, and its best to grab them when you come across them.

Yellow and blue Stars can increase your speed and can be collected while playing. Small Stars come from defeating enemies and the easiest source of Stars. There is also a Star Slide produced by machines, meaning you can get Stars by trailing after opposing riders.

Kirby Air Riders also has Lessons, or tutorial stages that players can go through to familiarize themselves with the basics of the game. You can also open a Tutorial at the beginning of a stadium or course by pressing Y.

Players can also adjust the settings of the game itself in the Options menu and before starting a game mode for a better experience. You can adjust the visual effects, sound volume, accessibility settings, and the controls.
For beginners, Slow Mode is recommended to get them used to the Air Ride courses first. This will adjust the default speed of the overall race.

You can practice Air Ride and Top Ride courses with the Time Attack mode, in which players can do solo races that record your best time over a set number of laps. Free Run mode is similar, with a race consisting of only one lap.
You can play the Free Run mode in City Trial as well, and explore Skyah with no time limit! You can familiarize yourself with the terrain and areas in Skyah in preparation for future City Trial runs.

Kirby Air Riders have its own achievement list called the Checklist! Players can open the Checklist at most menus of the game, to see which achievements they can get. You can select an achievement to aim for from the Checklist, and have it bring up the conditions needed for said achievement.
