Super Mario RPG Remake has a lot of changes and differences from the original SNES game like updated visuals, UI improvements, and new content. Read on for the complete list of remake changes and differences, as well as all new mechanics, improvements, and more!
List of Contents
The remake also added an exclamation point prompt for when to push buttons for Action Commands in order to make the timing of it easier for players to achieve.
Having this prompt would be greatly beneficial if you want to reach 100 consecutive Super Jumps, but do note that the prompt goes away after a couple of successful Action Command inputs.
Triple Moves are powerful attacks unleashed by your entire party after filling up the Triple Move gauge.
Note that Triple Moves change depending on the active party members, so be sure to mix and match accordingly to see all the different types!
To execute the Triple Move, players must fill up the Action Move Gauge located on the lower left side of the screen by successfully timing action commands.

Booster's Loco Express 023 dealing 9999 damage!
The Super Mario RPG remake now offers post-game content, allowing you to take on stronger bosses to test your combat skills after beating the game!
Another change revealed from a Nintendo Direct trailer was the addition of Chain Boosts. Players can give Mario and his allies buffs by chaining their attacks, presumably by consecutively hitting the timing of Special Moves perfectly.

Completing the game unlocks a new Sound Player Mode where players can hear all the songs in the game in both the SNES and Switch versions. This was only mentioned in an official Japanese press release, which also notes that some of the songs are still unlocked until certain secret conditions are met!
Sound Player and How to Unlock
Super Mario RPG Remake introduces Breezy Mode, which gives players the option to play the game in a difficulty that's much more accessible than the base difficulty.
Players can switch between Breezy and Normal modes at any time during gameplay and has no effect to the main story whatsoever.
Difficulty Setting and Breezy Mode Differences
The Monster List menu provides a list of all monsters players have previously encountered as they progress the game. Here, they can check monsters' stats, in-battle animation and movement, and other interesting details about them! It's implied that some of these details are only added once players have confirmed them, such as the Thought Peek text, making a completely filled Monster List a potentially coveted goal for true 100% completionists!
How to Complete the Monster List
Players can now keep track of their Super Jump as there is now a counter that appears on the screen. This is most useful when trying to get the Super Suit and Attack Scarf as you will need to do 100 and 30 jumps respectively to get them as rewards.
Players can now store items in the Storage Box should they exceed the allotted limit. This can be accessed in Mario's House and can be found right at the start of the game.
The Journal includes a Monster List which acts as a guide for all the monsters you've encountered and Sound Player that lets you listen to the original and newly-arranged music. In the post-game, you will get access to the Scrapbook which logs various moments on your journey in-game as well as the Play Report.
Players can now fast travel to various locations in the game by way of the map menu. From the menu, players can choose to fast travel to places they've already visited.
A new mechanic has been added where party members can be switched to other members during their turn by pressing the + button. You can switch out party members, even if they're affected by status conditions or KO'd.
There are equipment only obtainable in the post-game, such as the Teamwork Band. Some equipment are dropped by rematching the bosses in the post-game.

SNES Graphics |
Switch Remaster Graphics |
The most obvious change from the original SNES game is its updated graphics, with the remaster now sporting detailed, 3D models instead of the 2D graphics of the 1996 title.
Additionally, there are select cutscenes in the game that use CGI animation instead of the in-game character models, making the game much livelier than ever before!
Unlike the original game, perfect action command timing of certain moves can now damage all enemies instead of a single target, encouraging players to time their attacks well for bonus damage!
All Action Command Timing for Special Moves
Super Mario RPG's original composer, Yoko Shimomura, returns to work on the remaster's musical score, giving her previous work a refreshing spin that would excite longtime fans and newcomers alike.
While an updated musical score has been made for the remake, players can still listen to the SNES score by switching it from the Music Select menu.
Apart from graphical improvements, the remake provides quality-of-life changes to system menus and combat UI.
Characters' health bar (HP) and Flower Point count (FP) are now visible at the bottom of the screen at all times instead of only showing up when it's the player's turn for easy tracking.
Players can also access a Help menu in combat, which provides quick tips and strategies in battle.
Footage of the menu shown in Japanese official sources showed a few new options in the out of battle menu as well for improved player quality of life.
In the original game, the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom was named Toadstool instead of Peach. The remaster changes this detail and now refers to the Princess by the name she's most known by these days.
Peach Special Moves and Best Weapon
A multitude of names have been changed from the previous game, from bosses, enemies, to items and equipment. Longtime fans might be surprised that the names they've come to remember might have changed in the remake.
Some features or items from the original game (which were originally missable) have been updated and can now be accessed even after reaching later parts of the game.
Another change in the game is in one of Grate Guy's Casino games. While the original game had Blackjack as one of the games, this has been swapped out for a memory game instead.
Grate Guy's Casino Location and Guide
The original game limits the maximum coins you can hold to 999, but the limit has been increased beyond 999 in the remake.
Items can now stack in your inventory so you can hold more items, freeing up space for the other items you'll be carrying.
How to Increase Inventory Space
Invincibility Stars have an exploit that allows you to easily gain experience and levels when you spot one in the SNES version of Super Mario RPG. Exploits like these were removed in the remake to allow for a balanced gameplay progression.
