The best party and team composition in Super Mario RPG consists of Mario, Peach, and Geno. Mario will serve as the main attacker, Peach as the healer, and Geno as a secondary attacker and buffer.

Switch Geno with Mallow for Elemental Attacks

Mallow can use various elemental Special Moves that can exploit enemy weaknesses for bonus damage. Consider switching out Geno for Mallow when against bosses with elemental weaknesses, like Speardovich who is weak to Lightning.

Party Members Can be Switched Any Time

Super Mario RPG Remake - Switch Party Members

One of the changes added to the remake is that you now have the ability to switch out party members even during battle. When it's a character's turn, you can switch them out even if they're affected by status or knocked out.

This means that focusing on having the best three-person party is less important in the remake, since you can now choose to focus on more than three members and just switching out when the situation demands it. For example, Mallow is one of the weaker characters in general, but he has elemental attacks, making him extremely useful against enemies with weaknesses against Lightning and Ice; switch him in when the situation demands it.

The best teams listed in this article are mostly just to show the three best active party to have in the different stages of the game.

Shooting Star Shot Mario Mario Bowser Bowser Geno Geno

Toad Assist Mario Mario Any -

Another addition to the remake is Triple Move Attacks: powerful moves with effects that depends on the party composition. To use a Triple Move, fill out the Move Gauge until it reaches 100% by using Action Commands.

Before using a Triple Move, consider switching out your party first! Another party might have the Triple Move that will be better for the current situation. You'll be able to see the Triple Move effects when you're switching party members.

Starting Lineup

Mario, Mallow, and Geno will be your first full party as players progress through the story. With this lineup, Mario and Geno will primarily focus on attacks, while Mallow will juggle between magical attacks and healing.

Geno ・Responsibly for the party's firepower and support.
・Buff allies with Geno Boost.

Full On Offensive Team

Upon reaching Booster Tower, swap out Mallow with Bowser to form a full-on offensive team. At this point in the game, Bowser will have more than decent stats compared to Mallow that could make defeating enemies a breeze. But when necessary, consider swapping Mallow in to take advantage of his elemental attacks.

Note that this offensive team has no dedicated healer, so be sure to stock up on healing items!

Best Party for the Sunken Ship (Chapter 5)

Attack Healing Attack
Mario Mario Peach Peach Bowser Bowser
Example Party Strategy
Mario ・Responsible for the party's firepower.
・Use Jump or Fire-based attacks if effective.
・Heal using items.

Bowser ・Responsible for the party's firepower via physical attacks and debuffs.

Peach Becomes a Mainstay Upon Recruitment

Removing Peach from the party after she joins is difficult, as her healing and revival moves are just too good to pass up. Paired alongside a high-attack character like Bowser, Mario and his party can clear the board easily when it comes to defeating enemies.

If you want a fully offensive team, you can consider having Peach on standby and use Geno or Mallow as the active party member; you can still switch her in when you need her support specials.

Obtaining the Safety Ring Ensures a Formidable Party

After defeating Johnny on the Sunken Ship, be sure to get the Safety Ring. The accessory prevents instant defeat, status ailments, and most elemental attacks.

Additionally, consider equipping the Safety Badge to another character as well, preferably Peach, to make sure she won't be inflicted by any status ailments as she continues to support the party.

Mallow ・Responsible for the party's firepower.

Ice is effective against multiple enemies in the Barrel Volcano area.

Mallow's Lightning and Ice-based Attacks Will Be Effective for This Area

After completing the Sunken Ship, most enemies will be weak to Lightning and Ice-based attacks, both of which are attacks Mallow possesses. Additionally, Lightning attacks are effective against Speardovich, which players will face right after returning to Seaside Town.

To strengthen Mallow further, level him up to 14 so he can unlock the skill, Snowy, which is an Ice-based attack that targets all opponents.

Best Endgame Party (Chapter 7)

Attack Healing Attack/Buffs
Mario Mario Peach Peach Geno Geno
Example Party Strategy
Mario ・Responsible for the party's firepower.
・Use Jump or Fire-based attacks if effective.

Geno ・Secondary offensive and buffer

・Only attack if party is sufficiently buffed.

Best Endgame Party: Mario, Peach, and Geno

If the goal is to clear the game, players could use any party member and form their team comps and accomplish that goal easily, as the difficulty of Super Mario RPG Remake is not that high. Focusing on four or all five characters is not a bad idea either, because you can just switch characters in battle when the situation needs it.

However, should players want to take on the endgame as quickly as possible, consider having Mario, Peach, and Geno as your active party and focusing all the EXP and the best equipment to them, as they're the overall strongest characters in the game. With each party member having a distinct role with little to no overlap, the party's synergy would allow defeating enemies a breeze without losing much on defenses, items, and the like.
