Mario | Geno |
Mario and Geno are both the strongest physical attackers and spellcasters in the game, especially in endgame when they fully outstrip Bowser and Mallow in Physical and Magic stats.
It's possible to go all-in on Physical on one and Magic on the other, but as Mario is great at Single-target damage and Geno excels at Multi-target damage, we recommend putting sufficient Physical and Magic stats on both Mario and Geno to maximize the versatility of both party members.
Mallow |
Mallow serves as the game's main elemental spellcaster, so investing points in Mallow's Magic allows you to deal more damage when using your skills.
Mallow can also serve as a secondary healer, but pales in comparison to designated healers, such as Peach that is specifically built as a healer.
Bowser |
Bowser's Magic Skills are limited compared to other characters, and are primarily used for inflicting Status effects. For this reason, we recommend eschewing Magic entirely and maxing out Physical instead to focus on Bowser's strength!
Peach |
Peach benefits greatly when you invest points into her HP stat when she levels up. Peach is valuable when alive, since she functions as the primary healer, even if that comes at the expense of her damage output.

The table above shows which Bonus has a higher than normal value at each level. The pattern repeats every 3 levels, in the order of Magic → Physical → HP.
You will receive larger stat increases when choosing HP as your Level Up Bonus if your character is at Levels 1-20. When the character reaches Levels 21 and above, the stat increases for HP drop significantly. For this reason, it can sometimes give more total stat points to choose HP even over the Boosted Bonus in the early game.
Note that this applies to all characters except for Bowser as his HP Level Up Bonuses stay consistent even after reaching Levels 21 and above.
As seen in the screenshot, choosing Magic gives Mario +3 points on Magic Attack.
You can check the stats in the level up screen to determine which Level Up Bonus gives the largest stat bonus. You can also calculate it by divide the level by 3 and take the reminder to find the Boosted Bonus. If the remainder is zero, the stat is Physical; if one, HP; and if two, it's Magic.
Note that you don't have to follow this system. You may choose not to boost the Magic Attack stat of a character that barely uses it, or to focus all bonuses into a single stat for a character whose potential you want to maximize in a particular way. See our Builds for each Character for different potential bonus routes while leveling up, with details on the Stats for each character.
This section explains how to get the highest possible overall stat numbers for every character by always choosing the highest stat values each time on level up. Note that this might not always lead to the best possible build for that character; it simply shows how to achieve the maximum possible stat total.

Mallow receives a huge amount of stat increase on HP at Levels 2-20 and this decreases drastically once he reaches Level 21-30.
Choose HP as your Level Up Bonus Stat up until Level 20 and then evenly distribute the 3 bonuses after reaching Level 21. You can also put some points into Physical when it matches HP if you prefer, though Mallow tends to perform best as a Spellcaster.

Geno receives boosted stats on HP at Levels 7-20 with some slight increases on Attack and Magic Attack stats.
Choose HP in these levels to increase his maxmium health and then evenly distribute the 3 Level Up Bonuses once he reaches Level 21.

Leveling up Physical after your character gains a level will increase your Attack and Defense. Attacks that can be blocked all fall under the Physical category, and its damage is modified by the Attack and Defense of characters.
Having a higher Attack stat increases the damage you deal when using Physical attacks.
For your characters, damage you deal when you choose Attack and your character's respective move are the ones affected by your attack stat.
Defense, as the name implies, is a character's resistance to Physical Attacks. Having a higher Defense stat reduces the damage you take from Physical Skills, but does not reduce the damage you receive from Magic Attacks.

HP is simply the amount of Hit Points a character has. This determines how much damage a character can take before being downed, and unable to take action.
Once a character is Down, they cannot attack or use commands, and can only aid in the battle once they are revived using a technique or an item.
You will receive large stat increases when choosing HP as a Level Up Bonus if your character is around Level 1-20. The stat bonus will then decrease when a character reaches Level 21 and above.

Adding points into Magic raises your Magic stats, both offensively and defensively. Skills that consume MP and deal damage all fall under this category, and these skills cannot be blocked.
Having a higher Magic Attack stat increases the damage you deal when you use your Special Moves. Magic Attack also increases the amount of HP recovered by Healing spells.
Some Magic Skills also require additional input from you, such as pressing a button repeatedly to further increase the damage you deal!
Magic Defense reduces the damage you take whenever an enemy uses their Magic.
Since Magic cannot be blocked, having points invested into Magic Defense ensures that you can take a hit whenever an enemy uses Magic, allowing your character to stay longer in the fight.
Leveling up in Super Mario RPG lets you choose one of the three level up bonuses: HP, Physical, and Magical. These three bonuses give you additional stats further on maximum HP, Attack and Defense, and Magic Attack and Magic Defense respectively.
Each level gives a higher bonus than normal – let's call it a Boosted Bonus – for one of the three choices. Make sure to choose carefully especially if you are creating a specialized build for a certain character.
Choosing Level Up Bonuses for your characters is extremely important, since it helps your characters specialize in what they do best.
Spellcasters like Mallow benefit greatly from Magic investments, while Physical Attackers like Bowser require Physical investment.
