Stats and Buffs Explained

Stats define your character's strengths and weaknesses and can be boosted with buffs in Super Mario RPG Remake! Read on to learn what each stat does, what kind of buffs there are, and how it affects your characters in our guide!

Stats Explained: What are Stats?

Attributes That Define Your Characters

Stat Description
HP Character's Hit Points
Speed Determines Character's action order
Attack Determines Physical damage dealt by characters

Each character in Super Mario RPG have unique base stats, so you may notice that some characters have higher points in a certain stat than others, despite being on the same level.

Stat Bonuses Explained

Stats are Improved by Levelling Up

Super Mario RPG Remake - Raise Party to Level 3

Each time a character levels up in Super Mario RPG, their stats increase, and gain an additional option to level up one of three choices that increase your characters' stats further.

Keep in mind that each level gives a higher bonus than normal to one of the three choices, giving the option to increase the associated stats by more than the usual amount if the player chooses that bonus.

Physical, HP, and Magic Stats Explained

Stat Bonus Description
PhysicalPhysical Increases Attack and Defense
HPHP Increases Character's Hit Points
MagicMagic Increases Magic Attack and Magic Defense

Each time your character gains a level, you can choose to level up either Physical, HP, or Magic.

Each character has their own strengths and benefit from having Stat Bonuses allotted into a specific stat, so while it is ultimately your decision how to build your characters, we recommend following our Character Builds to get an idea on what each character should specialize in!

Attack and Defense Boosts Explained

Increases Corresponding Stats by 50%

Super Mario RPG - Geno Boost

Attack and Defense Boosts are buffs that increases damage dealt (Atk and M. Atk stat) and reduces damage received (Def and M. Def stat), respectively. These buffs can be applied by using Geno Boost or accesories like Quartz Charm and items like Yoshi-ade.

All Sources of Attack and Defense Boosts
Source Type Boost
Geno Boost Move Atk/Def
Quartz Charm Accessory Atk/Def
Troopa Medal Accessory Atk
Ghost Medal Accessory Def
Energizer Item Atk
Party Energizer Item Atk
Bracer Item Def
Party Bracer Item Def
Yoshi-ade Item Atk/Def

Only One Stage of Each Boost Can Be Active

Attack Boosts and Defense Boosts each count as a single buff, which means a target can only have one stage of each boost at a time.

Boosts of the same type won't stack, even if they are from different sources (e.g. using Energizer on a character already wearing a Troopa Medal), unless the character falls in battle—therefore losing the buff—or if the boosts get purged by moves like Shredder.

Elemental Resistance Explained

Reduces Damage Received from Fire, Ice, and Lightning

Having an Elemental Resistance buff halves the damage the character received from Elemental attacks like Fire, Ice, and Lightning types. This buff can be obtained by wearing the Nurture Ring and Booster's Charm.

Stacks with Defense Boosts

Despite both reducing damage received, a character wearing either Nurture Ring or Booster's Charm can still be buffed with Defense Boost. This will reduce elemental damage taken by 75%.
