1. Choose the Stat that Gets the Highest Gain When Leveling Up

Super Mario RPG Remake - Level Up Bonus

When a character levels up, you'll get a bonus to their HP, Physical (Attack and Defense stats), or Magic (Magic Attack and Magic Defense stats). One of these three choices will always have a higher bonus than usual, depending on the level.

To figure out which stat has this Boosted Bonus, divide the level by 3 and take the remainder. If the remainder is zero, the stat is Physical; if one, HP; and if two, it's Magic.

Note: This is only recommended if going for a versatile build and not a stat-specific build.

2. Leveling Up Restores HP

One of the benefits that leveling up gives is restoring the character's HP. Make sure to check the experience points of your characters so that you don't waste your HP-restoring items.

3. Action Commands Make Your Attacks Stronger

Super Mario RPG Remake - Action Command

A mechanic uncommon in turn-based RPGs that this game has is your damage being boosted with Action Commands: doing certain actions while the attack is about to hit. They can also turn normal attacks into multi-target hits that damage the entire enemy team.

Timed Hits are the most common: when you press A during the given timeframe as your attack hits, you'll deal up to double the damage! Other action commands include repeatedly pressing a button or holding a button instead; make sure to check the attack descriptions in the game.

There's also Timed Blocks, where you press a button as an enemy attack hits to reduce enemy damage. If timed perfectly, damage can be negated completely.

Chain Action Commands to Perform a Triple Move

Something new introduced in the remake is the Action Gauge and Triple Move system. Constantly perform Action Commands to fill up the Action Gauge; once you fully fill the Action Gauge, you'll be able to perform a Triple Move: a super powerful attack performed by your current party, that will deal massive damage to your enemies!

Chaining Action Commands in a row will provide Ally Boosts depending on your current Party. Mario's Ally Boost improves your Action Gauge gains, so the more you chain, the faster your next Triple Move will come.

4. Attack and Defense Boosts Don't Stack

Super Mario RPG - Geno Boost

Attack Boosts and Defense Boosts each count as a single buff, which means that spamming Geno Boost on one character won't skyrocket their stats, as these boosts don't stack. Each character can get 1 stage of Attack Boost and 1 stage of Defense Boost only.

Boosts from Accessories and Items Won't Stack Either

Attack and Defense Boosts that you get from accessories, items, and moves won't stack with each other, as well.

For example, using Geno Boost or Yoshi-Ade on a character wearing the Quartz Charm won't have an effect at all, and you would just be wasting FP.

On the other hand, using Geno Boost on a character wearing Troopa Medal won't have an effect unless you get the timing right and get the Defense Boost, which will add the defense buff only.

5. Flower Items Also Restore FP to Full

Super Mario RPG Remake - Flower Tab

Save on Syrups by remembering that Flowers and Flower Items (Flower Tab, Flower Jar, and Flower Box) fully restore FP too! Flower Items, along with their effect of adding a specific amount of maximum FP, also refills your FP to full.

Knowing this, don't immediately use your Flower items if you don't need them yet, as this tip can be useful in a pinch.

6. Hidden Chests Exist Throughout the World

Super Mario RPG Remake - Hidden Chest

Throughout the game world, there are hidden floating treasure chests that are usually hard to find. There's no indicator to where these chests are, and blindly jumping everywhere would likely not get you these chests, as some require complicated maneuvers to get.

As you progress, you'll be able to unlock a Signal Ring, which gives a signal when a hidden chest is nearby, as well as an Echo Signal Ring late in the game which beeps faster the closer you are to the chest.

Even better, unlike the original game, there are no missable chests! Sadly though, there's no reward for finding all 39 hidden chests, so there's no need to make a fuss over opening every single one unless you're a diehard completionist.

7. Jump on a Wiggler Ten Times to Get a Frog Coin

Super Mario RPG Remake - Jump on Wiggler

Frog Coins are a currency separate to the regular gold coins, and is used to buy certain useful items. While you can get these in chests normally, you can also infinitely get them; jumping ten times on a Wiggler's head gives one Frog Coin. There are a few of them in Forest Maze.

When you reach the Land's End area, you'll gain access to minigames that give more Frog Coins, but Wigglers are your best bet for Frog Coins before that.

8. Constantly Use Mario's Jump Special

Super Mario RPG - increasing Jump damage

Keep using Mario's default special move, Jump, even when you get stronger abilities. This ability has a secret feature where every time you use it, its base attack permanently increases by 0.5, so the more you use it, the stronger it gets! Note that this only applies to Jump, not its variations Super Jump and Ultra Jump.

It will eventually one shot higher HP enemies as you increase its base power, outdamaging most of your other single-target special attacks!

9. Repeatedly Use Mario's Super Jump to Get Certain Items

Tip: Spikey enemies are good targets to get the 100-hit Super Jump from because they are not affected by Jump attacks and don't flinch on each hit.

Each time you successfully land a Timed Hit with Mario's Super Jump, you can follow with another Timed Hit to increase the damage. You can repeatedly do this until you make a mistake or reach 100 hits.

You'll get items from a Chow in Monstro Town once you reach 30 consecutive hits (Attack Scarf) and another when you reach 100 consecutive hits (Super Suit). Both equipment are two of the best equipment you can equip in the game.

10. Save Up Frog Coins for the Seaside Town Shop

Super Mario RPG - Seaside Town

There are various shops in Seaside Town, one of them specifically is a Frog Coin shop that is located on the second floor of the Elder's house.

The shop contains valuable items like the EXP Booster that doubles EXP gain by the wearer, and See Ya, a reusable item which allows you to run from non-boss encounters without fail.

What to Spend Frog Coins On

11. Don't Overlook Mushroom Boy and Swap Shop

Super Mario RPG - Moleville Swap Shop

The Mushroom Boy and Moleville Swap Shop might seem like niche shops to visit, but you can obtain rare items for cheap in both of them.

You can trade in the various Mushrooms you find to Mushroom Boy's shop in Seaside Town for a chance to get Rock Candy and Flower Tabs. You can buy Mushrooms for 4 Coins apiece, making this a great way to farm both of these items.

The Swap Shop is located on the eastern end of Moleville. It's hard to get enough points to buy something if you actually try to bring unwanted items, but if you simply buy 10 Mid Mushrooms for 20 coins each at the Moleville item shop and bring them here, you can effectively buy a Fright Bomb, Fire Bomb, or Ice Bomb for 200 coins.

12. Know the Missables Before You Miss Them

Should You Give The Wallet Back

Super Mario RPG Remake is jam-packed with loads of content for you enjoy, however, there are some pieces of it that can be missed and cannot be returned to once you progress more into the story.

This includes the items you can only buy from the Seaside Town Shop before you beat the next boss and completing a story-related minigame for the Booster Charm. Try to study up on the missables before getting too far in so you don't have to learn about them after it's already too late!
