Latent Powers is a new game mechanic in Octopath Traveler 2. Combat features a new gauge that fills up every time you do damage, take damage, or break foes. Once a character's gauge is full, they can activate a powerful ability. Each character has a unique Latent Power.

How to Use Latent Powers

Fill Up Gauge and Press X or Triangle


Activate Latent Powers by pressing NSW - X / PS4 - Triangle Button.png!

Once the Latent Power gauge on the upper right corner of the screen has been filled up, players can use their Traveler's respective Latent Power to turn the tides of battle if need be.

This can be done by pressing the X button (Switch) or by pressing Triangle (PlayStation).

How to Fill Up Latent Power Gauge Fast

Break Foes or Take Damage

Break Enemies
Your can fill up your latent power gauge faster by taking damage or breaking foes by exploiting their weakness. A lot of enemies have a weakness to a certain weapon or element so it is helpful to have multiple weapons and elemental types equipped in your party to have a wide coverage of weaknesses you can exploit.

Take Greater Damage to Raise Gauge Fast

Breaking the Enemy Break

A test was conducted to measure how many damage you can receive before the Latent Power gauge becomes full. It was concluded that the more damage your character takes, the faster their Latent Power Gauge will fill up.

Pairing this Breaking enemies, players should be able to fill up their Latent Power gauge in no time to unleash powerful attacks!

Gauge Resets to Zero When Incapacitated

Incapacitated
The Latent Power gauge drains to zero whenever your traveler gets incapacitated in battle, so be sure to keep this in mind while playing.

Hikari: Shadow's Hold

Shadow's Hold
Unleash the darkness within to gain access to special skills.
Ability Description
Tenretsuzan Unleash a highly powerful sword attack on a single foe.
Hienka Unleash a sword attack on a single foe 2 times, then act again at the end of the turn. Only one additional action can be taken per turn.
Sougetsusen Unleash a polearm and sword attack on all foes 1 time each.
Supplemental Information
These skills do not consume SP.

With Shadow's Hold, Hikari can deal large amounts of continuous damage to enemies.

Use this when Hikari's Latent Power Gauge is full. This gauge can be charged passively throughout the battle by taking damage and breaking foes.

Extend the reach of skills to all.

Replenish all your BP in an instant.
Supplemental Information
Highly compatible with the Donate BP skill that gives BP to allies.

Partitio's Latent Power is Hoot and Holler. This powerful support skill instantly replenishes a team member's BP, allowing them to unleash stronger attacks.

Osvald: Concentrate Spells

Concentrate Spells
Focus spells on a single target with greater potency.
Supplemental Information
All all-target spells become single target but becomes stronger.

Osvald's Latent Power is called Concentrate Spells. This power lets Osvald unleash powerful spells on a single opponent.

Use this on powerful enemies to wilt their HP down quickly.

Temenos: Judgment

Judgment
Lower your foe's Shield Points with any attack.
Supplemental Information
Compatible with any skill that hits foes multiple times so you can lower shield points faster.

With Judgment, Temenos can lower enemy shield points using any attack. Using this power, he can break enemy defenses regardless of their weaknesses.

Throne: Leave No Trace

Leave No Trace
Act twice in a single turn.
Supplemental Information
You can choose two different actions such as choosing Attack and then using a job skill immediately afterwards.

Let your inner beast loose and gain access to special skills.
Ability Description
Beastly Claws Unleash a powerful physical attack on all foes.
Beastly Howl Reduce the physical defense and elemental defense of all foes for 3 turns, and reduce their Shield Points regardless of their weak points.
Beastly Fangs Unleash a highly powerful physical attack on a single foe.

These skills do not consume SP.
