Scouting and catching monsters can be easily done by applying a few methods in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Price (DQM3). Read on to learn more on how to scout and catch monsters easily, as well as tips to consider when scouting.
It is recommended to defeat the boss in a particular area before scouting for monsters since it will likely increase your scouting success. You should prioritize progressing the main story before you try scouting some monsters.
During Initial Encounter | After Reducing HP |
---|---|
Decreasing the HP of a monster you want to scout will increase the likelihood of scouting it. Just be careful not to defeat the monster during the process. The less HP the monster has, the higher your chances for success.
Your scouting rate depends on your monster's attack or wisdom, whichever is higher. You will have better chances if these stats are increased, so try to use the Oomph skill for monsters with high attack or the Ping skill for monsters with high wisdom before scouting.
Giving monsters meat items will increase your scouting rate. This is because you have a higher chance of getting the monster to join you after battle. With that, make sure to stock up on meat items incase you encounter a rare monster.
Item | Effect | Shop Price | Sell Price |
---|---|---|---|
Mystery Meat | Suspicious meat of unknown origin. Feed it to a monster to increase the likelihood of it wanting to join you by a random factor. | 1500 G | 150 G |
Rarified Steak | Odd offcuts, the origin of which may never be ascertained. Feed it to a monster to increase the likelihood of it wanting to join you by a random factor. Occasionally inflicts a status ailment. | - | 40 G |
Manky Meat | A piece of putrid flesh that exudes a sour stench. Feed to a monster to very slightly increase the likelihood of it wanting to join you, but also poison it in the process. | - | - |
Monster Munchies | A meaty morsel that monsters love. Feed to a monster to very slightly increase the likelihood of it wanting to join you. | 100 G | 10 G |
Smoked Sirloin | A tender treat that monsters adore. Feed to a monster to slightly increase the likelihood of it wanting to join you. | 300 G | 30 G |
Meaty Treat | A succulent cut that monsters go mad for. Feed to a monster to increase the likelihood of it wanting to join you. | 500 G | 50 G |

You can also increase your scouting rate by getting the Scout's Badge located at the 5th floor of the Circle of Conquest Upper Echelon. There will be a hidden room there with a treasure chest containing the item, as shown above.
Scout's Badge Effects and How to Get
One of the best ways to increase your scouting rate is by creating a party of scouting monsters. With that said, you will want to have monsters with the highest attack or wisdom possible, such as Gem Slime or Overkilling Machine.

Other Recommended Scouting Monsters
If you want to scout monsters of the same type that are currently in your possession, it is important to consider that the chances of scouting them again will be lowered.
If you plan on catching monsters of the same type, try doing through synthesis or make sure that the same type of monster is no longer in your arsenal.
It is much more efficient to add monsters in your arsenal through synthesis rather than to scout them as the latter process becomes more difficult when repeated.
When scouting for monsters, it is recommended that you aim for success on your first try to guarantee high chances of scouting in your following attempts. This will also prevent you from getting into a bad mood, which will result in lowered chances to scout.
If you perform a scout atack, you will see a number on the right side which indicates the probability of recruiting a monster. You can attempt to scout a monster until it is irritated.
If you are able to defeat all the enemy monsters, there may be a chance that a monster will get up to join you. The chances for this is very low, but a monster can still join you even if you fail to scout them. Due to this, make sure to always defeat a monster you want to scout instead of running away.
