Obtaining starters in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince (DQM3) depend on how you answer Monty's questions at the start of the game. Learn the best starters in the game, the answers for each starting monster, and the best early game monsters here.
Starting Monster and Rating | Pros and Cons |
---|---|
Cruelcumber
★★★★★ |
・Useful in many stages of the early game ・Learns Woosh, a damaging attack that hits all opponents ・Hard to synthesize |
Mud Mannequin
★★★★ |
・Excellent synthesis parent, since Material Monsters are a bit difficult to find early. ・Can be difficult to use in combat because of its low attack |
Fright Bulb
★★★ |
・Good for beginners ・Many good support skills: has HP recovery and stat buffs ・Not a good synthesis parent |
Platypunk
★★ |
・Has the highest physical attack among the starting monsters |
The best starting monster to choose in general is Cruelcumber, with Mud Mannequin also being a consideration for being a better synthesis parent.
The one we recommend the most is Cruelcumber. It learns the AoE damaging skill, Woosh, under its Blowy Slasher talent. You can get this skill as soon as it reaches level 5, making it able to quickly be useful in the battlefield.
Monsters You can Synthesize With Cruelcumber | |
---|---|
Bodkin Archer | Beanie Meanie |
Cruelcumber is also a great parent for synthesis. Bodkin Archer can be obtained through synthesis with a Pixie, and the E-Rank Beanie Meanie is also obtainable with an Odd Cob.
Also, if you're interested in completing your Monsterpedia, it's best to start with Cruelcumber since it's the hardest to obtain among the starting monsters.

At the start of the game, Monty will ask you two or three questions. He'll only ask two if you selected the same answer for the first two questions.
You can choose your starting monster by choosing the specific answers in the table above.
If you are not satisfied with the monster you got, you can choose again just before the monster is given to you.
After showing the monster depending on your answers, Monty will ask if you're happy with the monster. Select No to answer the questions again.
Don't worry about missing out on the other starting monsters. They're not limited only during the starting monster selection; you can get them through synthesis later in the game.

Foo Dog | She-Slime |
These are the best early game monsters we recommend to have upon getting your starting monster. All these monsters are available in the first area and can be acquired through scouting.
If you have a monster either in your party or the Paddock, your chances of successfully scouting it will get lowered a bit. If you need multiples of the same monster, you might need to prepare monsters that will increase your chance of scouting success.
Best Scouting Monsters
During battle, you can find out if an enemy monster is in the Monsterpedia by looking if there's a check mark beside the monster. Note that this does not indicate if you currently have the monster in your party or the reserves.
