Should You Give Back the Wallet?

Return the Wallet for a Flower Tab

In the course of the story, Croco steals a Wallet belonging to a Toad in the Mushroom Kingdom along with Mallow's Frog Coin. Defeating Croco at Bandit's Way causes him to drop the Wallet and the Frog Coin.

Returning the Wallet is the best course of action. Upon returning the Wallet, Mario will be rewarded a Flower Tab.

A Flower Tab will permanently increase the overall party's FP by one, making it useful as more Flower Tabs are used along the way.

More FP Means More Special Moves

Party Special Moves cost FP to use, and investing in Flower Tabs can make a lot of difference to starting special moves such as Mario's Jump (costs 3 FP) and Mallow's Thunderbolt (costs 2 FP).

Special Moves are tools that excel in various battle situations such as exploiting enemy weaknesses and supporting party members.

Should You Sell the Wallet?

Wallet Only Sells for Temporary Coins

At any item shop, Mario has the option of selling the Wallet for 123 Coins, which is not a lot considering you can farm coins.

Selling the Wallet will make the owner upset at Mario for the rest of the game. However, there are no negative consequences or future events tied to this action that will affect Mario for the game's entirety in anyway.

Flower Tabs are Permanent Upgrades

Overall, returning the Wallet is often the better choice given the rarity of Flower Tabs and the investment from them needed for more FP.

More FP means being able to use more Special Moves, and you will encounter more battles to use Special Moves than opportunities to buy equipment.

Coins are temporary but Flower Tabs are forever. If you need to farm coins, you can simply farm them from enemies, or exchange items between shops!

You can return the Wallet to a Toad in Mushroom Kingdom to get a Flower Tab in return. You can talk to this Toad later on to receive another Flower Tab or Frog Coin.

Alternatively, you can sell the Wallet for 123 coins but the Toad becomes angry if he finds out.

How to Get Wallet

Defeat Croco at Bandit's Way

You will receive the Wallet after defeating Croco at Bandit's Way. After the boss fight, Croco flees and drops the Wallet upon defeat.
