How to Fish

How to Fish
1 Find a Fishing Spot and Choose a Brother
2 Select a Fishing Bait
3 Cast Your Line
4 Wait for a Bite and Reel It In

1. Find a Fishing Spot and Choose a Brother

Fish Brother

First, find a designated Fishing Spot on the island. Then, choose which Brother will do the fishing, as each one can catch different types of fish and items.

2. Select a Fishing Bait

Fish Bait

Next, select a Fishing Bait. Each of the three available Baits can attract different fish and items, so choose carefully based on what you’re hoping to catch.

If you’re running low on Baits, you can purchase more from the Concordian Fisher, who can usually be found near the Fishing Spot.

3. Cast Your Line

Fish Cast Line

Once you've chosen your Brother and Bait, cast your line and you can see the status of your Bait on the upper-right part of the screen.

4. Wait for a Bite and Reel It In

When an exclamation point (!) appears next to your Bait, press A (Mario) or B (Luigi) to reel it in quickly. The number of exclamation points indicates the rarity of your catch: a single (!) is common, while (!!) or (!!!) hint at rarer and more valuable catches.

Fishing Bait

Item Effect
Standard BaitStandard Bait An excellent bait for beginners. You can catch basically anything with it.
Handcrafted BaitHandcrafted Bait This bait is best for catching fish that go into making equipment.
Rarest BaitRarest Bait This bait is best for catching fish that can be sold for a high price.

Standard Bait has a higher chance of catching common fish (!), but you can still get uncommon (!!) and rare (!!!) catches occasionally. Your chances of catching rare fish increase the better the bait you use.

Mario and Luigi May Catch Different Fish

Both Mario and Luigi should be able to catch common items and fish, but some fish or items may be more likely to be found by one brother over the other. For example, we have had more luck getting the quest bottles with Mario.

How to Unlock Fishing

Unlocked After Clearing Lottacoins Island

MLB Fishing Rod

After completing Lottacoins Island, approach the Concordian Fisher on the right side of Shipshape Island, near the Big Cannon to receive the Fishing Rod.

It would be interesting to see if it's connected to the STACHE stat for each of them. Also you can get the Treasurefish in Gulchrock Sea or Stormstar Sea using the Rarest bait. Sells for 1,000 coin and is needed for the All-Sand Island whirlpool.

"We have more luck getting Quest Bottles as Mario" Funnily I had the total opposite experience. Mario just couldn't fish them out but Luigi always got quest items first or second try. It felt like Mario had an equal chance of getting everything while Luigi is lopsided for quest items.
