Mario and Luigi Brothership How to Dodge and Counter

Dodges and Counters in Mario & Luigi: Brothership can be done by pressing the action buttons at the right time. Learn how to perform dodges and counters in battles, and get additional tips in this guide!

How to Dodge

Jump to Avoid Enemy Attacks

During an enemy's turn, you can press the action buttons (A button for Mario and B button for Luigi) at the right time to dodge their attacks. Watch the enemy's attack closely to know which bro will need to dodge and when to do so!

Some Attacks Target Both Mario and Luigi

Some attacks require both Mario and Luigi to be prepared to dodge. Observe the attack carefully to see if it will hit the other bro and dodge accordingly.

How to Counter

Swing Your Hammer at the Right Moment

Countering is done by holding the action button to ready your hammer and releasing it at the right time to counter an attack. Successful counters both block the attack and deal damage to the attacker.

Stomp On Enemies During a Dodge

This only applies to certain enemies and attacks, but an enemy charging at Mario or Luigi when attacking can also be an opportunity for a stomp counterattack! You will need to jump a bit earlier than a regular dodge to land a stomp on an enemy.

However, this isn't effective for some enemies as they can either be immune to stomp attacks or have spikes and other defenses that can damage you instead!

Observe Enemy Behavior First with Emergency Guard

Countering is a bit trickier than dodging as it requires a more precise timing on releasing the action button. Just to be safe, utilize the Emergency Guard mechanic and observe the frames where the attack connects first.

Emergency Guard can be done by holding the R button during an enemy's turn. This will make Mario and Luigi switch to guard stance and significantly reduce the damage that they take.
