How to Complete

Objectives

Horizon Zero Dawn - Find Rost
Find Rost.
From the nearby Campfire, head East. Rost will be on the cliff, looking over the valley.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Gather Ridge-Wood for Fire Arrows
Gather 10 Ridge-Wood.
Ridge-Wood can be gathered from Ridge-Wood plants. These are easily found throughout the open-world.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Get Blaze from Striders
Gather 3 Blaze from Striders.
Head over to any Strider Site (marked on the map). Shoot off the Blaze Canisters from their backs or use the Silent Strike ability to take one down and loot its carcass.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Get Metal Shards from Machines
Gather 5 Metal Shards from Machines.
If you still don't have enough Metal Shards, plenty of Watchers, Scrappers, and Striders roam the Embrace. Hunt them down to collect the needed shards.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Craft Fire Arrows
Craft Fire Arrows.
Using the gathered resources, craft Fire Arrows using the Weapon Radial.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Purchase a Tripcaster from Karst
Talk to Karst and Trade for a Tripcaster.
Now, head over to Karst the Merchant near Mother's Cradle. Purchase a Tripcaster with one Scrapper Lens.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Meet Rost at the North Gate
Meet Rost at the North Gate.
Run over to the North Gate of the Embrace and speak to Rost by the Campfire. Use the same Campfire to save and progress the quest.
8 Horizon Zero Dawn - Follow the Path of DestructionFollow the Path of Destruction.
After the night cutscene plays, simply follow the waypoints towards the Sawtooth. Only 1 Watcher will be guarding the approach.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Kill the Sawtooth
Kill the Sawtooth.
The Sawtooth is weak to fire. Use Fire Arrows to set it alight and your brand new Tripcaster to stun it.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Loot the Sawtooth
Loot the Sawtooth carcass.
Approach the dead Sawtooth and loot it for resources. This completes the quest.

Tips and Strategies

Learn Silent Strike and Lure for Easy Machine Kills

Horizon Zero Dawn - Silent Strike SkillSilent Strike Press R1 (on PS4) to perform silent takedowns on small machines and humans, or deal high damage to medium enemies.
Horizon Zero Dawn - Lure Call SkillLure Call Use ! from the tools menu to lure a single enemy to your position. The target will be the closest, most centered in Aloy's view.

Lure and Silent Strike are perfect skills when looking to easily farm Machines like the Watchers, Scrappers, and Striders that roam the Embrace.

Easy one-hit kill mechanics with the ability to lure them towards Aloy (without using rocks) will greatly help in the initial gathering segment of the quest.

Complete the In Her Mother's Footsteps Side Quest

Horizon Zero Dawn - In Her Mother

While a bit lengthy and far away from the main quest's objective locations, this sidequest rewards Aloy with a +1 Spear Damage Boost.

Complete this side quest to get an edge over the Sawtooth later on (especially when playing on higher difficulties).

Use the Tripcaster to Stun the Sawtooth

Horizon Zero Dawn - Use the Tripcaster to Stun Sawtooth

When first encountering the Sawtooth outside the Embrace, make sure to Tag and Highlight its Path using your Focus. The glowing arrows will show you where to place a Tripcaster wire that can stun the Sawtooth when it first crosses.

Note: On higher difficulties like Ultra Hard, a single Tripcaster wire will not stun the Sawtooth. It will take at least 3 in order to bring it down, so stack the wires when planning to use this method.

Use Fire Arrows to Burn the Sawtooth

Horizon Zero Dawn - Use Fire Arrows to Inflict Burn

Sawtooths are generally weak to Fire Damage. It only takes 3 Fire Arrows on Normal difficulty to set it alight, providing damage-over-time while Aloy frantically dodges its attacks.

Additionally, the Blaze Canister located on its underside can be hit with Fire Arrows to make it explode for extra damage.

Learn the Critical Hit Skill

Horizon Zero Dawn - Critical Hit SkillCritical Hit Press R1 (on PS4) for a high damage attack on downed enemies.

The Critical Hit skill synergizes really well with the Tripcaster as it gives the option to deal high damage to a stunned Sawtooth. On higher difficulties, this skill will be worth it to level up before the encounter.
