Quest Giver Erend. This quest is acquired automatically during the quest, The City of the Sun.

Description Erend's sister Ersa was ambushed and killed by the Shadow Carja. He wants to track down the soldiers who did it and take his revenge.

How to Complete

Horizon Zero Dawn - Red Ridge Pass Location
Meet Erend in Red Ridge Pass.
Red Ridge pass is directly north of Cut-Cliffs. This small settlement is, again, directly north of Meridian. Head over to the marker to meet up with Erend.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Kill the Machines Attacking Erend
Kill the Machines fighting Erend.
Upon arriving, you will see Erend fighting Lancehorns and Watchers. Help out the Oseram fighter and kill the Machines.
3 Horizon Zero Dawn - Talk to Erend about ErsaTalk to Erend and Follow him to the Battlefield.
Talk to Erend and follow him to the battlefield where Ersa was ambushed.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Investigate the Battlefield
Investigate the Battlefield.
Hit R3 and use your Focus to examine the battlefield. Mark the following items and examine them individually: Arrows, Thicket, Helmet, and Spear.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Follow the Cart Tracks
Follow the Cart Tracks.
After the investigation, Aloy will be made aware of cart tracks in the distance. Use your Focus to highlight the tracks and follow them up into the ridge above.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Kill the Human Attackers
Kill the Attackers.
Human soliders will be waiting in ambush for you and Erend at the top. Deal with them before they kill you.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Destroy the Ravagers
Kill the Machines.
2 Ravagers will show up after you kill the human enemies. Use Tearblast Arrows to remove their guns, and Freeze Ammunition to inflict Freeze.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Investigate the Ambush Site
Investigate the Ambush Site.
Hit R3 and use your Focus to examine the ambush site. Mark the following items and examine them individually: Bits of Leather, Bloodstains, Rocks, Weapons, and Tripod.
9 Horizon Zero Dawn - Present the Facts to ErendTalk to Erend.
Speak to Erend and discuss the findings. Reassure him with the idea that Ersa may still be alive.

Tips and Strategies

Use Freeze Ammo to Blow Up Freeze Canisters

Horizon Zero Dawn - Exploit Freeze Canisters

Freeze Ammunition from a Carja War Bow or Sling can set Freeze Canisters to explode upon contact. This works for the Lancehorns and Ravagers that you encounter during this quest since they have the canisters on their backs.

When frozen, machines take increased damage from normal arrows such as those shot form a Hunter Bow. Additionally, freeze also restricts Machine movement for a short amount of time.

Detach and Use Ravager Guns

Horizon Zero Dawn - Detach and Use Ravager Guns

To deny Ravagers their ranged attack move, use Tearblast Arrows to detach the cannons from their backs. This allows you to pick up the fallen gun and use it against them.

Shoot Ravager Power Coils to Stun Them

Horizon Zero Dawn - Shoot Ravager Power Coils

The problem with shooting off a Ravager's gun is that the Machine becomes rabid without its ranged weaponry. Favoring devastating lunge attacks, the Ravager is still dangerous even without the gun.

To keep it still and easy to hit, use Shock Ammunition fired from a War Bow or Sling to hit its Power Coils. This sets off an electric reaction that stuns the Ravager.
