Tips and Strategies

Repair and Override the Frostfigures Tallneck

Frostfigures Tallneck Horizon Zero Dawn

One of the easiest criteria to clear for challenging Aratak for the chieftan position is to repair and override of the downed Tallneck. If you have not yet done so, go ahead and complete this quest as it fulfills one of the objectives while making most of the new map, visible.

Complete a Snowchants Hunting Grounds Trial

Horizon Zero Dawn - Complete a Snowchants Hunting Trial

Another easy proving challenge to complete is the Snowchants Hunting Grounds. Players will only need to complete one challenge in order to fulfill the objective of this mission.

The Control Trial involving the use of the Stormslinger is one of the easier hunting trials to complete at this location.

Clear Out the Stone Yield Bandit Camp for a Forgefire

Horizon Zero Dawn - Stone Yield Bandit Leader

While more difficult than the Tallneck and Hunting Ground objectives, clearing the Stone Yield Bandit Camp in the Cut will reward players with the new Forgefire DLC weapon.

On top of fulfilling the objective and a new weapon drop, players can also get +2 Bluegleam and a Pigment by exploring and looting the camp itself.

First Challenge: Use a Blast Sling

Horizon Zero Dawn - Use a Blast Sling for the First Challenge

To finish the challenge quickly, players can use a Shadow Blast Sling or Lodge Blast Sling full of damage modifications to essentially two-shot the groups of small machines in the area.

Instead of trying to exploit the weaknesses of the various Lancehorns, Longlegs, and Redeye Watchers, players can use the full-damage Blast Sling to kill them rather quickly and efficiently.

Second Challenge: Tie Down the Sawtooth

Horizon Zero Dawn - Tie Down the Sawtooth

This challenge only needs Aloy to kill the two Freeze Bellowbacks. Before you begin, make sure to use a Shadow Ropecaster or Lodge Ropecaster to tie down the patrolling Sawtooth.

Doing so will allow you to focus on the Bellowbacks without having to dodge additional attacks from this lunging Machine.

Second Challenge: Use Hardpoint Arrows on the Bellowbacks

Horizon Zero Dawn - Use Hardpoint Arrows for the Bellowbacks

To quickly deal with both Freeze Bellowbacks, use Hardpoint Arrows to rupture their Freeze Sacs. This makes them frozen, sluggish, and susceptible to normal arrow damage.

Once the Freeze debuff is active, pepper them with even more Hardpoint Arrows to quickly bring them down.

Allow Aratak to Distract the Other Frostclaws

Horizon Zero Dawn - Let Aratak Distract the Frostclaws

The third challenge of this trial will be aborted due to the appearance of 3 Frostclaw Machines. When the cutscene first ends, allow Aratak to take the brunt of the assault while you focus on killing one of the Frostclaws.

Rupture the Freeze Weak Points and Use Hardpoint Arrows for High Damage

Horizon Zero Dawn - Destroy the Frostclaw Freeze Sacs

The quickest and easiest way to deal with the Frostclaws is to rupture their Freeze Weak Points. Use Hardpoint Arrows to destroy the sacs on each of its shoulders or the freeze unit located on its belly.

Note: To maximize the Freeze duration on each Frostclaw, make sure to rupture each weak point only when the debuff ends. This allows you to extend the debuff duration for 2 full lengths before there are no more weaknesses to exploit.
