How to Upgrade the Spear

Damage Upgrade

Horizon Zero Dawn - Spear Damage.jpg

After completing In Her Mother's Footsteps, your spear will have a permanent Damage upgrade and rarity upgrade from Common to Rare. Completing the quest The Mountain that Fell, permanently replaces your Spear with Sylen's Lance, which already comes with 2 modification slots.

Override Upgrade

Override Upgrades are unlocked after completing and securing Cauldrons. These give Aloy the ability to control machines to aid in battle or travel. The earliest Override can be acquired after defeating the Corrupter in The Womb of the Mountain quest.

Early Modification Upgrade

A Secret Shared Errand

This errand is exclusive to the Frozen Wilds DLC, but is readily availabe when you purchase in the Complete Edition of the game. Completing this errand will grant your Spear 1 modification slot. This allows you to modify your Spear with a Damage Coil very early in the game.
