Ranking is Based on Dialogue

Keep track of what Kipp, Bones, Goo, or Boo says since it's randomized who says which phrase, and you have to determine their rankings based on their dialogue. Refer to the table above to match the lines spoken by the characters with their respective ranks.

How to Solve the Triathlon Puzzle

1. Put in the Ranks that Were Mentioned in the Dialogue

C and D pretty much straightforward gave their ranking, where C said that he came in 3rd for swimming, and D fell into 4th place during the bike race.

2. Determine the Rankings of C

Since there are no other mentions of C being in the other events, it's best to assume that C placed either 3rd or 4th in cycling and in the marathon. D was placed 4th in cycling, so this makes C place in 3rd.

3. Determine the Marathon Ranks

Since A said that 2 other beat him in the marathon, this puts A into 3rd place.

B outrode D in the bike race and mentioned that D was never able to pass B, which puts B 1st plce in the marathon and D in 2nd place. With C left without a rank, this puts C in 4th place.

4. Determine the Rest of the Rankings

D ended up in the same place in the swimming event, which means that if he placed 2nd in the marathon, he also placed 2nd in the swimming race.

A placing the same in the swimming and cycling events but being beaten by 2 others in the Marathon suggests that A is placed 1st in both swimming and cycling.

With all ranks assigned except for B, B is left with 4th place in swimming and 2nd place in cycling.

How Does a Triathlon Work?

A Triathlon's Order is Swimming -> Cycling -> Marathon

This puzzle can be tricky if you aren't familiar with the ordering of Triathlons in real life. Triathlons are always ordered with swimming first, followed by cycling, and ending with the marathon.

The events are not judged separately, but instead they are continuous, meaning that the contestant in 1st place for swimming will continue into 1st place at the start of the cycling event, and that they might still be passed later on. In essence, this means that the contestant who ended with 1st place in the marathon will be the 1st place winner of the entire Triathlon.
