List of All Endings and Conditions
Normal Ending - Beat the Game Once
The first ending every player will get after beating the game is the Normal Ending. This version is more inline with the older versions of the game, and the post-credit scene will hint at there being more do to in the post-game.
True Ending - Clear Post-Game Content
To get the true ending, you will need to complete the optional dungeon in the Cave of the Dwarves. After that, you will need to defeat the person who gave you the side quest in a boss fight to get the item that unlocks the True Ending.
Once you've got the item, you'll need to defeat Hargon and Malroth again. This will then trigger the new final boss for the true ending, so make sure you're prepared for an extra two phases to final fight.
Can't View Normal Ending After Unlocking the True Ending
As a note, once you've got the item that unlocks the true ending, you will no longer be able to view the Normal Ending of the game. This is because you will always summon the true ending final boss, essentially locking you out of the normal one.
Which One is the Canon Ending?
Both Endings are Canon
In Dragon Quest 2, the normal and true endings are both considered to be canon. This is because the true ending expands on the normal ending, and there's no major differences outside of the new true ending boss and content.
