Like with the Dragon Quest 3 remake, Dragon Quest 1 has updated graphics for the remake, allowing players to enjoy the game with a HD-2D feel that the Dragon Quest 3 remake had.
The remake also comes with new and improved music and sound effects. This includes a new orchestral version of the game's original soundtrack, as well as sound effects to enhance the player's immersion.
Many classic sounds from the original game are retained including menu sounds and certain combat effects, creating a blend of old and new atmosphere.

The remake adds voice acting to events and conversation scenes of the story, improving the narrative experience. The voice acting is available in both English and Japanese.
These new events and cutscenes are similar to the episodes in the DQ3 HD-2D Remake, expanding the story and strengthening both games' links to Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.
List of All Characters and Voice Actors

Besides the flashbacks that give context to what happened before the game began, the main story itself will be expanded as well.
In the older versions of Dragon Quest 1, there were never any interactions with Dwarves and Faeries. However, the Remake sends the Hero to visit both the Village of the Faeries and the Cave of the Dwarves.

One of the biggest changes in the HD-2D Remake is that the Princess of Cannock joins as its new fourth party member. Her inclusion will shake things up and provide something new to the game's combat and story elements.
Princess of Cannock Character Guide

There are three available difficulty settings for the game, namely Dracky Quest, Dragon Quest, and Draconian Quest. Based on preference, players can choose whether to enjoy the game for its story or challenge themselves with difficult enemies and bosses.
Best Difficulty Setting and Differences

In line with other recent Dragon Quest games, saving becomes more accessible in the game. Additionally, the game now has both Autosaves and Quicksaves.
The Quicksave creates a temporary save file for when the player must stop playing while between save points. This allows players to leave the game in the middle of a dungeon or while exploring and return to where they left off.

| Sigil | Battle Effect |
|---|---|
| Sun | Causes even special skills to land critical hits. |
| Water | Greatly amplifies the effect of Items. |
| Soul | Unlocks Souped-Up Skills. |
| Moon | Spells grow wildly in power. |
| Star | Restores MP over time. |
Magical Sigils were once exclusive to Dragon Quest 2, but were retroactively added to the Dragon Quest 1 Remake. The Hero can now find and acquire different Sigils, each of which will have different effects in combat.

The battle system present in the Dragon Quest 1 remake will also overhaul the previous 1v1 battle system the original game had. Players can now encounter multiple enemies per battle.
This enhances the threat the Hero faces, forcing him to adapt his tactics accordingly.
Tips and Tricks: Beginner's Guide to DQ1

Many new monsters and bosses were added to the Dragon Quest 1 Remake, including some creatures that were first seen in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.

With the update to the battle system allowing for multi-enemy encounters, new spells and abilities are present in Dragon Quest 1 and 2 Remake, including group-hitting spells like Sizz.
List of All Spells and Abilities

Like with group-hitting spells, weapons with multi-hit abilities like Boomerangs and Whips were added into the games.

The new equipment items added also have special properties that weren't present in the older versions of the games, adding more options for the heroes to use in combat.

Like in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, players can now equip up to two accessories for stat bonuses and additional effects.

As with the Dragon Quest 3 Remake, you can now change the battle's speed between Normal, Fast, and Super Fast. This will help make exploration and farming a lot faster, especially for returning players who just want to experience the new features of the game.

Scrolls can help players learn new abilities that cannot be learned through normal means. Additionally, Scrolls can help players increase their characters skills and abilities in combat.

The recurring boss Robbin' 'Ood makes an appearance in the DQ1 Remake, in addition to the many appearances he had in the franchise starting from Dragon Quest 3. This time Robbin' gates the way towards acquiring the Thief's Key.

The Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake includes new story content in the form of new subplots that send the Hero to destinations not in the original game. These new subplots strengthen the connections between Dragon Quest 1 and 2 and Dragon Quest 3 as parts of the Erdrick Trilogy of games.
One scenario will have the players seek out Rubiss, the creator goddess of Alefgard. The Hero will experience a dream and seek to summon Rubiss by speaking to the Dream-Whisperer, leader of the faeries.
Other scenarios hinted at in pre-release promotions include encounters with the Warlock of Doorlocks and a visit with the Dwarves.

Similar to Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, there are areas called "Secret Spots" that will most likely be tied to side quests or general exploration. These are areas where you'll find new items or collectables that weren't in the previous versions of the game.

Mini-Medals have also be added into the game, like in Dragon Quest 3 Remake. Mini Medals are collectibles found in nooks and crannies of the game that are exchangeable for valluable weapons and armor.
All 40 Mini Medal Locations and Rewards

Players will now find sparkling items scattered aross the world at Sparkly Spots. As seen in later Dragon Quest titles, interacting with them will give you various rewards such as items, stat seeds, and Mini Medals!
Some Sparkly Spot items may even be collectibles that unlock new rewards when gathered.
Based off the Dragon Quest 3 remake, Tantegel Castle and Tantegel Town are now integrated into each other and are not two separate locations in the game. Similar to this, additional layout changes to the world, dungeons and tombs around the game make the Dragon Quest 1 Remake feel fresh and new, while still surfacing familiar locations.

The game removed the need to use torches for navigating dungeons in the game, so that the upgraded graphics can be shown in full detail when exploring the world of the game.

A new playable area was added to the Dragon Quest 2 Remake, this time set under the sea, where the party journeys to the Seabed in a ship. There they will encounter mermaids under threat from Hargon's minions.
Similar to Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, there are areas called "Secret Spots" that will most likely be tied to side quests or general exploration. These are areas where you'll find new items or collectables that weren't in the previous versions of the game.
