Play Dragon Quest 3 First to Understand Erdrick's Story

Starting with Dragon Quest 3 gives you the full origin of Erdrick, the legendary hero whose legacy is being told all throughout the first two games. Since 3 is chronologically the beginning of the Erdrick Trilogy, playing this one first makes the callbacks in the later games make more sense.

If you have a save file for the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake attached to the same account you're using for this game, then you will get either a Cat or Dog Suit at the beginning of the game.

As a note, if you make a save for DQ3 after you start playing DQ1 or DQ2, you will still be able to get the suit when you check the chest at Tantegel's Inn / Midenhall's Inn.

How to Claim Pre-Order and Bonus Items

Dragon Quest 1, 2, and 3 though are fully playable on their own, so you can totally play them in release order or in any order you like. DQ1 and DQ2 don’t assume you’ve played 3 because DQ3 originally released last.

There are callbacks, connections, and easter eggs, but none of the games is dependent on having beaten another for you to enjoy the story.
