Dragon Quest 2 - Is there new game plus

There is no New Game Plus option in Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake (DQ2). Read on to learn how to start a new game at Level 48, and find out if a New Game Plus option exists!

There’s no New Game Plus once you’ve cleared Dragon Quest 2. Still, the remake adds plenty of post-game content from additional secret bosses to new dungeons and even a true ending.

Lvl 48

In the HD-2D Remake, there is no New Game+ plus option, but you can start a pseudo-NG+ at level 48 by inputting a special default name, もょもと (Moyomoto), from the original Famicom/MSX (NES) Japanese version of Dragon Quest II.

This name was originally used for password-based save states on the old system and entering it in the remake triggers a high-level start for your main character with Level 48 and 27,671 gold, while your party members’ levels remain unaffected.

You Must See the True Ending to Enable the Trick

If you skip the true ending and start a new game naming your character もょもと, your hero will still begin at Level 1. The trick only activates once the true ending has been unlocked.

Before you can access the Level 48 New Game+ trick, you need to complete the true ending of the game. This ensures the Japanese Name Trick can be activated, unlocking the high-level start for your next playthrough.

Once the true ending is obtained, begin a brand-new game file. This is the starting point where you can apply the Japanese Name Trick to trigger the Level 48 boost.

Change the Language Settings to Japanese

Text Language to Japanese

To input the special default name, you must switch your game’s language to Japanese in the settings. This allows the game to recognize the original Famicom/MSX default name code.

Name Your Character as もょもと

Moyomoto

Enter もょもと as your character’s name. This is the key trigger for starting your game at Level 48 with 27,671 Gold as starting money!

Additionally, your party members’ default names will change to Eileen for the Princess of Moonbrooke, Sigurd for the Prince of Cannock, while the Princess of Cannock retains her name, Matilda.

What are the Characters' Canon Names?

Trick Won't Work Without the True Ending

If you haven’t obtained the true ending yet and try entering もょもと, your character will still start at Level 1. The Japanese Name Trick only triggers the Level 48 start after the true ending has been completed.

Switch Language Back and Start the Game

Lvl 48

After entering もょもと, you can switch the language back to English if you prefer. When you start the game, your main character begins at Level 48 with 27,671 gold, while your party members’ levels remain at their default starting levels.
