Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake (DQ2)

True Ending Final Boss: How to Beat Malwrath

Add to Watchlist

Malwrath is the true ending boss encountered in the Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake (DQ2). See how to beat this final boss, the best equipment for the fight, and the boss' stats and moves here.

Erdrick Trilogy Attention! This page contains major spoliers for Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake! Continue reading on at your own risk.

How to Beat Malwrath

Remove the Shroud of Shadows with Erdrick's Supreme Sword

At the beginning of the fight, Malwrath will shroud himself in the Shroud of Shadows, making him difficult to hit or damage while it’s active. To remove it, simply use Erdrick’s Supreme Sword, which will make him vulnerable to attacks again.

If you don’t use the sword within the first three turns, you’ll be prompted to do so, as it’s highly recommended because fighting him with the Shroud of Shadows still on will make it very hard to deal any damage.

Erdrick's Supreme Sword Stats and How to Get

Can Also Be Removed by Dealing At Least 3900 Damage

On later stages, when Malwrath uses the Shroud of Shadows again, you can go on the offensive and deal as much damage as possible. From testing, at least 3,900 damage should be enough to dispel it.

Use Snooze

Malwrath is vulnerable to sleep, but only after the Shroud of Shadows is destroyed. Once you get an opening, have the Princess of Moonbrooke use Snooze to put him to sleep. Make sure to equip the Duplic Hat to increase your chances of landing the spell, or use Wild Side first so she can cast it four times.

Snooze Effect and Level Learned

Boost Stats with Buffs

Use the War Drum to boost the attack of all party members. If you don’t have it, Egg On and Gritty Ditty should suffice, as both can provide buffs to the entire team.

All Buffing Spells and Abilities

Use Kaclang to Withstand the Dark Energy

If you’re in a pinch and can’t risk taking any heavy hits from Malwrath, use Kaclang to buy yourself more time.

Boost Defenses with Kabuff and Brownie Boost

If you’re struggling to keep everyone healthy, make sure to boost your defenses with Kabuff and Brownie Boost. The latter is especially recommended, as it also restores both MP and HP.

All Recovery Spells and Abilities

Bring Paralysis Recovery Items and Equipment

Malwrath can also inflict paralysis on the team with his spells and abilities. Make sure to bring recovery items to quickly cure this, or equip gear such as the Exotoga to shake off paralysis.

Accessories such as the Full Moon Ring can also help prevent your party members from becoming paralyzed when equipped.

List of All Healing Items

Use Kazap as a Last Resort

If the entire team falls below 30% health, it’s best to use the Prince of Cannock’s Kazap, as it is a guaranteed critical hit and can deal around 3,000 damage to Malwrath. Kazap also becomes souped-up thanks to its trigger condition, allowing the Prince of Cannock to unleash a significantly more powerful version of the spell.
