Critical hits let attacks deal triple the usual damage in Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake (DQ2). Learn how to land critical hits in battle and find out what critical hits are in this guide!
List of Contents

Critical hits trigger at random with about a 5% base chance, but this applies only to regular attacks. Spells and abilities can’t crit on their own since they need the Moon Sigil or the Sun Sigil before they can start landing critical hits.
Once you have those sigils, the same 5% base rate applies, and you can boost it further with Luck, gear, or certain skills.

The Sun Sigil allows abilities to land critical hits. You do not need to equip it as simply having the sigil in your inventory activates its effect.
You can obtain the Sun Sigil at the Shrine of Fire after finishing the events in Burrowell . The sigil sits at the north end of the area and is protected by two guards.

The Moon Sigil gives your spells the ability to critically hit. When a spell lands a critical, its damage increases significantly, and healing spells restore more HP.
To earn the Moon Sigil, talk to the King of Dirkandor and complete a series of battles against 3 Hades Condors, 2 Smackanapes, and a Striking Sabrecat.

Your Luck stat directly boosts your critical hit rate, so increasing it helps you crit more often. You can raise Luck by using Seeds of Luck found through the Dig ability, which can be used up to five times per dungeon floor.
However, Dig only pulls from what enemies on that floor can drop, so the seed type you get depends on the monsters currently in that area.
| Name | Effect |
|---|---|
| Sword of Ruin |
ATK: 135
Few swords are so capable of critical hits, but its brilliance comes at a cost; whoever wields it is inevitably cursed. |
| Headman's Axe |
ATK: 110
Just as likely to land a critical hit as it is to miss entirely. Best wait to wield this till you're feeling lucky. |
Weapons like the Headman’s Axe and the Sword of Ruin boost your crit rate, making it easier to score critical normal attacks. Keep in mind that both come with drawbacks as the axe increases misses, and the sword is cursed.
| Spell | Cost | Effect |
|---|---|---|
|
|
20 | Increases the caster's attack, defence, and chances of landing critical hits. |
Chant of Champions is a Souped-Up Skill used by the Princess of Cannock. As an enhanced version of its parent skill, Muster Strength, it increases the user’s critical hit rate while also raising Attack and Defence.

15 | Doesn't connect so often, but when it does, it can cause a critical hit. |
|
|
64 | A dream ability that can ensure a critical hit on an enemy. |
|
|
30 | Guaranteed to land a critical hit if it connects with the target. |
Some abilities are designed to always land critical hits. Moves like Critical Claim, Hatchet Man, and Lightning Thrust will automatically score crits as long as they connect with the target.
List of All Spells and Abilities

A critical hit is a boosted physical attack that deals triple damage and ignores the target’s Defence stat. Spell and Ability crits follow a different rule and only triggers when you have the Moon or the Sun Sigil, otherwise magic and abilities cannot critically hit.
Critical hits automatically defeat Metal Slimes if they land, since crits bypass the slimes’ extremely high Defence and their naturally low HP.
