I can confirm a lot less points needed for beetle mania. I have 8468552 and have a medal.

Hey thanks for the name drop. For the record, it's not too difficult to do Beetle Mania. The key is to mash all 4 face buttons (A, B, X, and Y) when you get hit so you recover 4x as fast as just mashing A (or any one button). As for getting a ton of points, I personally just sat in a corner until a bunch of shells appeared, then fired one shot (DO NOT spam fire!) to combo. Be sure to grab hearts to increase your recovery speed; they spawn from making big enough chains.
