Unit categories in Gundam UCE are tags that decide the status effects a mobile suit can get. Read on to learn what unit categories are, how unit categories interact, and how to take advantage of unit categories.
List of Contents

Each mobile suit in Gundam UCE has a series of phrases called Unit Categories. They are found in a mobile suit's Mobile Suit Screen, typically at the very bottom below its Weapon Info and Record.
Typically, these categories describe what parts of the Universal Century's history the mobile suit comes from, as well as its features.
For example, the Zeong was made during the One Year War, so it has the "One Year War" category. Since it was an unfinished prototype, it also has the "Prototype" category.
Its other unit categories are related to its lore as well, such as "Newtype Machne," "Rival Unit," and "Commander,". The "Zeon Forces-Affiliated" unit category even shows what side of the conflict the mobile suit fought for.
The purpose of these seemingly random phrases is that they trigger the buffs, debuffs, and other status effects the mobile suit can get from skills triggered by pilots, other mobile suits, and even modules.

If you look at a pilot's skills, you will see that it will mention phrases that typically start with "When mobile suit unit category is X", with "X" being the unit category that will trigger that skill.
For example, Char Azable's [C0204] version will activate a 12% Accuracy buff if the mobile suit he is riding has the "Newtype Machine" unit category. This means if he's piloting the Zeong (or any mobile suit that has the same unit category), this buff will activate.

As for Mobile Suits, certain MSs have skills that only affect allies with certain Unit Categories. For example, Quess' Jagd Doga's EX Skill gives up to 44% extra damage to allies with the "Red Mobile Suit" unit category. Modules skills work roughly the same way.
There are a few mobile suits, however, that deal extra damage against enemies with certain Unit Categories.
For example, back before the meta units of today, units like the Blue Destiny Unit-1 and Pale Rider (Space Type) were useful because their EX Skills dealt extra damage to units with the "Newtype Machine" unit category (making them powerful versus former heavyweights like the Zeta Gundam).
It is yet to be seen if there will be mobile suits with similar mechanics in the future.

Understanding unit categories is one of the most important things to learn when it comes to making your units stronger in Gundam UCE. This will let you figure out what pilots you should get for your mobile suit, what modules to put on them, and which Sub MSs to pair them with.
For pilots, typically, the pilot who's released along with the Mobile Suit will give it the most buffs. But this is not always the case, as the pilot's skills may trigger with the MS's unit categories, but the buffs are not what the MS needs.

For example, the Gundam Full Armor may have Io Fleming as its signature pilot, but he is not the best pilot for the MS since he does give it any defensive buffs, a job better suited for Danton Hyleg (who is able to give the Gundam Full Armor a few defensive buffs).
It's the same for Modules and Sub MSs. Not only do you have to match the skill with the unit categories, but you will also have to ask yourself,
