When you place a unit in front of an enemy, that's the first enemy they'll target when the battle starts. If you put your units in front of enemies they have a type or category advantage against, they'll have an advantage against that enemy and an increased chance of winning.
This also means you should avoid placing your units in front of enemies they have a type or category weakness against and put them somewhere else on the battlefield.
Make sure you won't get outflanked whenever you set your formation, but also make sure there's an opportunity for your units to outflank the enemy.
For example, if your enemy is using a block formation similar to the above, you can split your team apart so that one half faces the block while the other half is on the other side of the map and can flank the enemy block.
Aside from just the actual formations, keep in mind what the optimal placements are for your units on the map based on their unit category.
For example, the S Gundam is a Bombardment Unit. The optimal placement for Bombardment and Sniper units is the backline, so try to keep them there. Raid, Armored, and Close Combat units meanwhile should be at the front, while Generic units should be at the midline.
A defensive formation that can be tough to crack for any attackers in Arena, especially since it concentrates all your firepower on only one side of the map.
The default formation, whose only redeeming factor is how it widely covers the map and all enemies (and also gives you space to maneuver any MSs you have that are weak versus that of the enemy's). However, it can be broken because of how thin it is.
If your enemy is using a block formation, this is one way you can split apart your team so that you can outflank the enemy mobile suits and surround them.
Gundam UCE's Auto-Deployment function is not as reliable as it should be because it only makes your units gang up on whatever units they have a unit advantage against. Of course, this is fine, but there's a possibility that these auto-generated formations can be broken or flanked if you're fighting against anything other than a computer opponent.
Just before a battle begins in Gundam UCE, you are given the option to deploy your units on the map and set their initial formation. This initial formation can give you an early advantage depending on where you place your mobile suits, which could then decide the outcome of the battle.
