When forming teams for the Arena in Gundam UCE, you need the right units.
You can't be using a lot of SR rarity units in your party and expect to go very far up the rankings (you can rise quite a bit if you put effort into building them up, but you won't get too far) because you will be soon outpaced by teams with UR rarity units with Transcendent Skills that give them a massive advantage over lower rarity units. Even fully upgraded lower-rarity units are still no match versus fully upgraded UR units.
Eventually, you'll need to amass a full team of not only UR rarity mobile suits, but as well as UR rarity pilots to go with them. Not only will you have to fully transcend and unleash the potential of these mobile suits and pilots, but you'll need a whole collection of them to adapt to the right scenarios. That's because you'll be switching teams or rebuilding your existing teams between battles, especially once you get out of Standard Arena and get into Elite Arena.
With new units coming out every two weeks or so and more on the way, the "meta" or the most optimal units to use in Gundam UCE can change relatively quickly. That means not only building up your own knowledge of how existing units work and what their strengths and weaknesses are, but also looking at new units and thinking of how their skills and stats can change the usefulness of other units.
What kind of EX Skill does the unit have? What kind of Transcendent Skill does it have? What stats does it have? Are these three things worth upgrading the mobile suit for? How many resources do you need to put into the mobile suit before it starts becoming "useful enough"? Do you even have enough resources to see the entire progress to completion? These are the questions you'll need to ask yourself when looking at new units and whether or not they will affect the "meta."
Deployment strategy is a factor in battles that are not touched upon deeply by the in-game tutorials. It's when you array your mobile suits before the enemy team and the start of the battle. But it's also more than that. Depending on how you deploy your units, you can win despite having differences in Combat Power and even lower rarity units compared to the enemy team.
One of the more famous ways to deploy your units is to stack them all in one corner of the map, sending them toward the enemy as one big blob of beam weaponry and EX Skills. However, it can be countered by an enemy splitting up their team so that there's one-half of it deployed in the corner directly opposite your team, while the other half is all the way on the other side to make a flanking maneuver.
Aside from general strategy, you will want to consider where you are putting your units. The best place to put a unit is in front of an enemy unit it has a type and category advantage over. The bonuses from category and type advantages are big in this game, and can help you win even against teams with a higher CP than you. The second best place is in front of a unit that it has a neutral advantage over. Finally, if you have a key unit that you absolutely need to last long in battle, try placing them behind an allied unit that can keep them safe and take the heat off it.
If you want to try out new deployment strategies, you can always test them out in Mock Battles mode. Here, you'll be able to learn how your mobile suits target enemies, how your enemies prioritize targets, and the best formations to beat them with.
