The Penelope is one of Gundam U.C. Engage's most powerful and popular units. You will run into this powerful mobile suit often in PvP, so how do you counter it? Read on to learn about the Penelope, its weaknesses, and which mobile suits can beat this MS.

The Penelope was one of the best defensive mobile suit in the game, being among the hardest Armored units to take down given its high guard rate. If you didn't already know, guard rate is a mechanic that gives mobile suits the chance to guard, which reduces the incoming damage down to just 1. This means that the Penelope can get hit by the hardest-hitting attacks in the game and receive just 1 damage per instance.

For attacks that do manage to go through its guard rate, it'll have to go through the Penelope's high DEF which is its base amount increased by 60%. Finally, its 25% max HP boost improves its health pool, allowing it to stand, fight, and guard for longer.

It was also decent as an offensive unit, given its high beam damage, accuracy, and powerful EX skill, which charges up each time it takes damage. However, that no longer amounts to much when you compare it to today's heavy hitters.

All these made the Penelope an exceptional defensive unit in the game, which also had the firepower to top the damage charts of the battle. The catalyst behind the Penelope's downfall was the crit rework, and how crits now are one of the most common types of damage among meta DPS units. Like many other units, the Penelope has weaknesses and counters that you can exploit to consistently beat this popular and meta mobile suit, just like its weakness to crits that we've briefly touched on above.

Penelope Weaknesses

Useless Against Crit Damage and Assault Status

Crits will always go through guard rate, and with the crit rework being implemented in early 2025, they allow MSs to bypass the damage cap and ignore the pilot's resistance stat. As a result, crit-oriented Mobile Suits are now better in consistently dealing significant damage to the Penelope.

On top of units with built-in crits being extremely prevalent in today's meta, there are now mobile suits with access to the Assault Status, which completely bypass regular guard rate. Mobile suits equipped with this status effect are also very much present in today's meta

Additionally, there now exists a far more potent version of guard rate, which is Perfect Guard. These new units being more and more capable have led to the downfall of previous powerhouses like the Penelope.

Guard Rate Decreases When Taking Damage

Each time it is hit, the Penelope loses 5% of its guard rate, maxing out at 100%. This leaves the base Penelope with just 10% guard rate, though the minimum guard rate will rise if Lane Aim is on board, who grants an extra 24% guard rate. Still, 10% and 34% guard rate is way easier to deal with than 110% and 134%.

To wear down the Penelope's guard rate quickly, use mobile suits with high hit-count weapons like the Qubeley and the Dag Doll as these will open it up for attacks way sooner than those with lower hit-count weapons.

Do note, however, that the Penelope quickly charges up its EX gauge when taking damage, so expect the Penelope to fire back with all its got when going for this strategy.

Outside of these two, the Penelope doesn't really have any other weaknesses. As long as there aren't any crits, Assault Status units, and too many high hit-count weapons against it, it'll still prove to be good at tanking.

Mobile suits with high critical rate can bypass the Penelope's guard rate for each time they land critical hits. The Ez8, in particular, is great to bring along against the Penelope as it grants the whole team critical strike and critical ATK, but even more for bombardment mobile suits. Meanwhile, units with crit built into their kits like the Sinanju (Generic) and the Rozen Zulu can deal with the Penelope well by landing their critical hits.

Mobile suits that grants itself the Assault status like the Nu Gundam DFF and the Theta Plus can also bypass the Penelope's defense, specifically by ignoring its exceptionally high guard rate altogether.
