Does Zero Damage to Enemies Immune to the Element

Some enemies have resistance to certain elements; when you hit them with an special move with the element they're immune to, your attack will deal zero damage.

For example, Spikeys, the enemy creatures with spiked shells, are immune to Mario's Jump element attacks (which make sense).

Mario can actually use Jump moves to damage enemies that are immune to his Jump moves! He needs to have Jump Shoes equipped to do so; its effect is specifically to bypass this immunity.

There are no other equipment like this for other elements; this is just unique to the Jump element.

Status Elements have Abnormal Effects

The game also have Status Element attacks, which work a different way to the other elements. Instead of direct damage, they inflict status conditions to the enemy.

Some Enemy Attacks have Elements, which Matters for Certain Armor

Enemy attacks do actually have elements as well, but the type of element doesn't matter, since your party members don't have specific weaknesses or immunities against certain elements.

However, there are some armor that specifically give immunities to all elemental attacks, such as the Super Suit. There are no armor that only give immunities to one element.
