Found in the Abandoned Temple Outskirts
The Demon of Obsession is one of the toughest boss encounters in the Bakumatsu era. You can find this boss in the Abandoned Temple Outskirts, located on the western side of the Nijo Castle area.
Follow these steps to reach the boss:
- Start from the Horikawa Market Shrine.
- Clear the Lesser Crucible to access Mibu Castle.
- Find Kunimatsu's shadow by the stairs across the bamboo thicket.
- Follow the shadow until you reach the Abandoned Temple Outskirts.
How to Beat Demon of Obsession
To beat the Demon of Obsession, use Water element attacks to inflict the Saturated status effect and Ninja style for the superior mobility. Use these strategies to win against the boss:
- Level 130+ Is Recommended
- Both Samurai and Ninja Styles Are Viable
- Use Water Element Attacks
- Avoid the Poison Puddles
- Stack Wind Resistance
- Use Summoning Seals
- Secure with Living Artifact
- Summon Assistance from Acolytes
- Use Talismans and Items for Buffs
Level 130+ Is Recommended
The Demon of Obsession is an optional boss with a much higher difficulty spike than other encounters at this point. The recommended level to face him comfortably is above level 130.
Both Samurai and Ninja Styles Are Viable
Players who prefer Samurai style can easily take advantage of the boss's slow, highly telegraphed attacks. These make blocking and deflecting relatively easy. Just watch out for the unblockable grab attack and the puddles of poison that slowly drain your health.
Ninja style is just as viable, as the boss primarily attacks directly in front. This makes it easy to land increased backstab damage. However, stay alert for two specific moves: the spinning attack that advances forward and the fist slam that triggers an explosion.
Use Water Element Attacks
The Demon of Obsession is weak against the status effect Saturated, making Water element attacks effective. Sources of Water damage include:
- Martial Arts and weapons imbued with Water
- Uncanny Bubble Ninjutsu
- Water Familiar and Water Shot Talismans
- Summoning Seal from Demon of Pride's Soul Core
Avoid the Poison Puddles
The Demon of Obsession will occasionally creates poison puddles on the ground. Circle around or jump over these pools to avoid the status effect, or use an Antidote immediately if you get poisoned.
Stack Wind Resistance
Look through your inventory and equip gear that have Wind Resistance, but don't sacrifice too much base defense. High defense remains more important for survivability.
Use Summoning Seals
Do not forget to use your summoning seals, especially as you can now have two of them equipped by this stage in the game. They can help deal extra damage, open opportunities to attack, or even save you from dying.
Secure with Living Artifact
Keep your Living Artifact ready to secure the kill during the second half of the fight when the boss becomes more aggressive. You're invulnerable while in this state but you must still dodge or block because sustaining damage shortens its duration.
You also have unlimited Ki while Living Artifact is active. Use this to spam your most potent Martial Arts.
Summon Assistance from Acolytes
Summon an acolyte from nearby benevolent graves to serve as a distraction and help deal chip damage. You'll need Ochoko Cups to summon acolytes, which you can obtain by defeating revenants from bloody graves.
Use Talismans and Items for Buffs
Use talismans and items such as Power Talismans and Power Pills to boost your attack. Note that they do not stack and only refresh the duration of the attack buff. Wind Stop Talismans help mitigate wind damage.
You can also use the talismans from Soul Cores listed below to give you an advantage.

Equip Awakening to Speed Up Talisman Usage
The Awakening skill is highly recommended to speed up talisman usage, especially against bosses where you can easily get punished.
It is also easy to fit in most builds as it only costs 3 Points.

The Demon of Obsession Soul Core has the following effects when equipped in the Onmyo Box:
- Yang Position: Summoning Seal - Conjures the Demon of Obsession to attack your foes.
- Yin Position: Hellgust Talisman - Creates a tornado that damages enemies in a wide area.
Transformed Art: Kurama Sword Dance Wind
The Demon of Obsession also drops the Transformed Art: Kurama Sword Dance Wind for the Ninja Sword.
Kunimatsu's Obsession Achievement
Defeating the Demon of Obsession unlocks the Kunimatsu's Obsession achievement.
