Block and Punish in Mid Stance
Yamagata Masakage moves around constantly, and chasing him will only waste your Ki. Instead, bait him into attacking, block his strikes, and punish with quick hits.
Samurai style's mid stance is best for this play style as you'll still recover Ki while holding block.
Exploit His Red Attacks
Yamagata Masakage often uses red attacks, but they have a lengthy wind-up and are easy to predict since they strike vertically.
Always try to land Burst Breaks to deal massive Ki damage and open him up for quick hits.
Attack from Behind
Try to position behind him when attacking as there are only a few attacks that can hit you: the wave of fire when he enters the Dark Realm and his circular weapon sweep. Both attacks are highly telegraphed and easy to avoid.
Use Water Familiar for Extra Damage
Since Yamagata Masakage is weak to water, the Water Familiar Talisman can help deal extra damage when he sticks to you in melee range.

Use talismans and items such as Power Talismans and Power Pills to boost your attack. Note that they do not stack and only refresh the duration of the attack buff.
Yamagata Masakage will use fire attacks in the Dark Realm. Use Firestop Talismans to increase your resistance against fire damage
