Ninja Style is recommended for beating Yamagata Masakage, especially since the fight has no Yokai Realms to purify with Samurai Style's Ki Pulse. This is also the perfect opportunity to get used to the new style and the Mist mechanic.
Yamagata Masakage telegraphs his attacks clearly, with most attacks striking directly in front. Ninja Style's low Ki usage makes it easier to sidestep and move behind him, allowing you to deal more damage with backstabs.
Yamagata Masakage's attacks have wide reach, but takes him a while to recover. Sidestep or dash behind him to take advantage of this window, but do not overcommit!
Play reactively at first, especially when his Ki is high, as he can easily shrug off your attacks and punish you instead.
After performing a grapple attack on Yamagata Masakage, he will often respond with an unblockable attack as he recovers. It has a lengthy wind-up, giving you plenty of time to keep your distance to avoid it.
This attack can be dashed through with i-frames, but requires precise timing and very risky.
Be ready to counter his red attacks with Burst Break (R2/RT) to take off a chunk of his Ki and create an opening. Look out when he starts spinning as he will follow it up with a red attack.
When his health drops below half, he will be more aggressive and use more red attacks. If you aren't sure of the timing, you can simply dodge instead.
Note: If you play on PC, turning off frame generation may help to reduce input lag.

Summon an acolyte from the benevolent grave near the shrine to serve as a distraction and help deal chip damage. You'll need one Ochoko Cup to summon him, which you can obtain by defeating revenants from bloody graves.

You can also farm a bit of Amrita to earn extra levels by backtracking and killing enemies, then using the shrine to respawn them.
Raise your Constitution for more health, and Stamina for more Ki. Don't worry about allocating stats as you can respec at any time.
Once Yamagata Masakage's health is low enough, you'll be able to transform into a Living Artifact (Triangle + Circle / Y+B). You won't take damage in this state, not even from unblockable attacks, but getting hit will drain the gauge faster!
