Open the gesture menu and hover over your desired emote. Press X (PS5), A (PC controller), or the left mouse (PC) to command your character to enact the chosen emote.
While emotes are mainly used to communicate in multiplayer, some are also used to progress objectives, or to peacefully deal with certain Yokai. Pay attention to dialogue and environmental clues to decipher the correct emote to use!

Nurikabe Yokai disguise themselves as closed off walls and they guard valuable rewards behind them. To interact with them peacefully, you must use the correct emote color (Blue, Yellow, or Red) in front of the door. If you choose the correct color, the Nurikabe will let you through without trouble. If you choose wrong, the Nurikabe will be angered and turn hostile.
If there are red Grave Revenants nearby, inspect them to see how they died, and use the correct color from that information. For example, if a revenant indicates they were killed by the Nurikabe for using a friendly (blue) gesture, that means the correct emote color to use is either yellow or red.
If you happen to choose the wrong emote, angering the Nurikabe, you can avoid fighting it by retreating to a Shrine, resting, and trying again.

Some chests actually conceal a Mujina mimicking the chest. When revealed, the Mujina will shapeshift into your character. Pay close attention to the emote it performs and quickly use the same emote in return to avoid a fight and get its rewards. If you take too long to emote or pick the wrong one, it will attack.

You can tell apart normal chests and fake Mujina chests by inspecting the bar design on either side of the chest. If the sides have two bars only, then it is a normal chest to loot. If there are three bars on either side, that means it is a Mujina.
While you still have to deal with the Mujina yokai to get the chest's rewards, knowing beforehand that it is a Mujina can help you prepare to use an emote sooner or inspect the emote animations to have a better chance of correctly copying the Mujina.
