Sonon's Backstory and Profile

A warrior hailing from Wutai, Sonon trained under Yuffie's father. He experienced the devastation wrought by his country's war with Shinra, and as a result, harbors a deep resentment for the company. He has been assigned to accompany Yuffie as she infiltrates Midgar—essentially making her his boss. In the English version of the game, Sonon is played by Aleks Le, a voice actor that has done a lot of large roles in well-known anime! He has done some roles in video games like the male hunter in Monster Hunter Rise, but his bigger roles are in anime like Zenitsu from Demon Slayer and Kazuya from Rent-A-Girlfriend! With his experience in the anime voice acting scene, we are sure to see him bring Sonon to life in INTERmission!

Sonon's Strengths and Unique Abilities

Synergizes With Yuffie

During combat, Sonon can synergize with Yuffie! This means that they can perform powered-up versions of some of Yuffie's abilities whenever they both have an ATB charge available. The synergized abilities will have their effectiveness and damage increased. It is time to lay down the beat down with some teamwork!

Non-Playable Guest Character

When it comes to combat, you cannot actually switch to Sonon and control him. However, you can still give him commands during combat by pressing L2. He can also synergize with Yuffie to perform a stronger version of her abilities.

Sonon's Synergy with Yuffie

When L2 is pressed, Sonon will warp to Yuffie's location and they will become Synergized. When Synergized, Sonon will follow Yuffie's lead, targeting the same enemies and switching between physical attacks and Ninjutsu to match Yuffie.

Yuffie also gains access to new Abilities when Synergized. If Sonon's Synergized Limit Breaks Weapon Upgrade for the Marshalist's Staff is unlocked, they are also able to perform a unique limit break together.

However, staying in Synergy mode will cause ATB to accumulate more slowly, so balance between the two modes is necessary.

How to Use Sonon

Use Incite and Provoke to Distract Enemies

Although Sonon is a formidable fighter on his own, his primary role is as an extra health bar to take damage that Yuffie doesn't have to. He tends to block frequently, making him perfect for this role.

In general, the more damage that can be moved away from Yuffie and on to Sonon, the better, so making use of Sonon's Incite Ability and the Provoke Materia are essential for this purpose. These tools will allow Yuffie to continue hitting fast and hard and building up her ATB meter. It's also a good idea to get Sonon's Incendiary Limit Breaks Weapon Upgrade for Marshalist's Staff or Djinn Staff early on to help him contribute as much as possible.

Use Synergy Dodge to Avoid Attacks

This technique is a bit advanced, but surprisingly easy to pull off. When Sonon is about to be hit by an attack, press L2 to Synergize and warp him to Yuffie's position. When timed right, he will avoid the attack completely.

This is especially useful for attacks like Pride and Joy Mk 0.5's Catch attack which inflicts the Bound status, forcing Yuffie to spend resources trying to free him. Simply using the Synergy Dodge at the right time can avoid the attack completely.

Sonon's Characteristics

Effect	Sonon uses his staff to beat on his opponents. He can also use it to synergize with Yuffie and make her attacks more powerful.

Yuffie's Subordinate

Like Yuffie, Sonon is also an agent of Wutai, tasked with accompanying Yuffie on her mission. Yuffie is technically his senior so he will be following her orders. Sonon trained under Yuffie's father, although that is a touchy subject that Yuffie avoids. He arrives in Midgar much earlier than Yuffie and has scoped out the area thoroughly, including some less than reputable establishments.

Brand New Character

Sonon is a brand new character to the Final Fantasy series. He was not mentioned in the original game, only introduced in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake DLC. He serves an important role in the plot of INTERmission as the only Wutaian ally Yuffie has in Midgar.

Older Brother of Melfi

Like Yuffie, Sonon bore witness to the Wutai War which ravaged their homeland, and saw the death of his younger sister, Melfi. As she died trying to protect others from Shinra's machines, Sonon harbors a specific grudge toward Scarlet and the warmechs she designs.
