The popularity of online play in the first Last of Us has led to many fans wondering if it will be making a return in the sequel. We will look at the possibility of an online mode, such as a competitive mode or online Co-op, in The Last of Us Part II.
List of Contents
The ever so popular Last of Us Factions brought players a different kind of online experience in the first game, which was enough fun to get fans wondering “Will there be multiplayer?” with regards to the sequel. Now that The Last of Us 2 is set to release soon, gamers are looking to get their hands on the next evolution of Factions.
This question has an easy, and unfortunate, answer: Not going to happen. Being as the first game had no co-op, and there has been no mention of a co-op mode in The Last of Us 2, the chance that a co-op mode is going to make an appearance in TLoU2 is basically zero.
Naughty Dog has made it clear that no multiplayer will be available in The Last for Us 2, however, they also sort of hint that a Last of Us multiplayer of the sort may arrive in some other form at another timeーdepending on how you interpret the tweet below.
Although the upcoming The Last of Us Part 2 will not offer any form of online experience on release, there is still hope yet. According to this Tweet by Naughty Dog, “You will eventually experience the fruits of our team's online ambition, but not as part of The Last of Us Part II”. This hints toward an online mode coming, but if it's not coming to the next game, it is likely that a standalone multiplayer will be coming, or perhaps an expansion of the game.
The most likely outcome is that Naughty Dog is planing to release a standalone online gameーbut how and when is another question. Naughty Dog had also been hiring staff with “Experience in Multiplayer”, which further points at this being the case. The choice to not include an online mode in The Last of Us 2 will probably lead to an even better online experience if, or perhaps when, a standalone multiplayer does release, but only time will tell.

I’m more of a stealth player so I didn’t enjoy the boss fight in the hospital. One touch and you’re dead, that’s not enjoyable or realistic. Might as well run outside and kick a bear. I’d get the same thing happen, dead. Too much story in this game as well, I feel like it’s hours of videos that takes away from the game play. Just give me the details and move it along. I don’t need to know who’s screwing who.
