Zhang Liao Movesets and How to Beat (General Tips)
Raise Lightning Resistance
Zhang Liao's attacks are imbued with lightning, so it would help to increase your lightning resistance by equipping items with high lightning resist.
Buff Before Entering Boss Area
The Zhang Liao boss fight will begin immediately after opening the door to the boss room, so buff yourself. Your Spirit Gauge will return to 0 as the fight begins but the buff will remain.
Attack From Behind
While fighting Zhang Liao, you can summon Zhang Fei and Liu Bei and let them attack from the front, while you attack from the back. Note that Zhang Liao's Divine Beast lightning attack can also reach his back, so stay cautious and back off when he attacks.
Keep Distance and Wait for Critical Blows

Forward Thrust
Zhang Liao hops backwards then thrusts forward with a critical blow that can be parried with a perfect deflect.
Jumping Spin Slash
Zhang Liao jumps into the air, then performs a spinning slash that can be parried with a perfect deflect.
Note that when Zhang Liao's HP is around the halfway mark, he is able to perform a Forward Thrust right after a Jumping Spin Slash, even if you deflect it.
Lightning Strikes
These lightning strikes are powerful and difficult to predict, but can be blocked with little consequence. This move can be deflected but it takes very precise timing with Zhang Liao's slashes.
Lightning strikes can appear when Zhang Liao brandishes his sword to coat it with lightning, does an overhead jumping slash, and a telegraphed single horizontal slash.
Focus on Critical Blows in Zhang Liao's 2nd Fight
When you fight Zhang Liao once more in the side mission The Fearless Blade, you won't be able to summon allies, so make sure to keep your distance focus on drawing out Zhang Liao's critical blows instead of taking him head on.
