How to Deflect Attacks

Parry an Attack by Pressing the Deflect Button Before Impact

To deflect an attack, parry using the Deflect button during the limited time window right before the attack impact. Pressing the button too early or too late will fail the parry and will likely cause you to get damaged, as well as draining your Spirit Gauge which will leave you vulnerable.

Make sure to only press the button once, since a double-tap press will make you dodge instead.

How to Counter Attack

Deflect Counter Attack by Pressing the Counter Attack Combination Before Impact

Deflect Counter Attack is a special attack where you attack and deflect at the same time. Just like the regular deflect, you need to press the counter attack buttons at the correct time during the limited time window right before the attack impact.

You'll know you're successful with the counter attack if you don't get damaged and your attack goes through after the enemy attack, as well as your melee weapons getting switched.

You may attack after this weapon switch; if you succeed, you'll recover all the Spirit in your whole Spirit Gauge!

The most effective way to hit the deflect is to do it shortly before the attack hits. Don't wait until the attack hits, try to deflect a bit before the attack.

Learn Enemy Attack Patterns

The most important thing when deflecting is remembering attack patterns. Deflecting gets much easier if you learn the patterns of the enemy's attacks. Some enemies have varying attacks, so be ready to observe and adapt your patterns.

Reduce Equipment Weight

The weight of your armor matters when deflecting attacks! Heavier armor might have higher defense, but they also have higher energy consumption and will make it harder to deflect attacks than lower weight armor. Change your armor to fit your playstyle.

Causes Damage to Enemy Spirit

A successful deflect reduces the enemy's Morale Rank. It also reduces the maximum negative value of their Spirit Gauge, which makes them easier to get out of breath and be vulnerable.

Deflect Critical Blow to Shrink their Spirit Gauge

A move called the Perfect Deflect is much harder to pull off but is much more rewarding; this is when you deflect the enemy's Critical Blow, which is when they start glowing red to prepare for a powerful attack.

Failing to deflect a Critical Blow will cause you to take a significant amount of damage, but deflecting it causes great benefits, such as a greater decrease in their Spirit, their gauge maximum value getting reduced, and usually leaving them vulnerable for a Fatal Strike.
