Raise Your Lightning Resistance

Most of Zhang Liao's attacks have Lightning elemental damage, so be sure to raise your Lightning resistance first before starting the boss fight. You can equip armor that has high Lightning resistance to reduce the damage.

Deflect Zhang Liao's Critical Blows

Make use of dashing to keep your distance away from Zhang Liao as much as possible. Guard against his normal attacks and only deflect if he performs the aerial Critical Blow.

He has another Critical Blow attack that may be more difficult to deflect as he performs a quick stabbing attack.
