Combat Mechanics Guide

This is a full Combat guide to Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Read on to learn all the mechanics that will help you stay in fights, techniques to make battles smoother, as well as all the necessary tips to make all your battles easier!

Lock On to Enemies

Press R3 to lock on to an enemy. Locking onto enemies help you keep an eye on them while fighting. Move your R Analog Stick to switch the lock on to another enemy.

It is Easier to Fight Groups of Enemies Without the Lock On

In battles with a group of enemies, it is recommended to remove your lock on. You will have a hard time keeping track of the enemies outside your vision range if you're constantly locked on to the enemy in front of you. This raises the risk of you getting attacked from behind.

Automatically Lock-on to Enemy When Melee Attacking is enabled by default. It is recommended to disable this since you'll have a hard time focusing on the enemy you want if you hit another enemy with a melee attack.

Use Evasion to Both Reposition and Dodge Attacks

Learning how to dodge is vital as it will help increase your chance of survival in battle! Evasion allows you to space out against enemies and gain a safety time to consume healing abilities or apply magic buffs. You can also time your evasion to deflect enemy attacks and counter for higher amounts of spirit damage!

Dashing Can be Used in Battle

Dash by pressing L3 as you run. Close distance on enemies or move away from a dangerous chain of attacks. This is especially helpful for high weight characters as the option of dashing out of combat via evasion is slower and thus, makes running away much faster and safer.

Guard While Fighting

Guarding helps you be ready for unexpected attacks. It's better to guard and study attack patterns than spamming attacks.

Attacks that has a red mark are critical attacks and cannot be dodged! Make sure to deflect these attacks instead or you'll suffer the consequences!

Guard While Parrying

Guarding while Parrying is also very effective especially against bosses. You can guard all non critical attacks and dodging while holding your button allows you to block the attack if you time your evasion late which greatly increases your survivability!

Don't Spam Attacks

Spamming attacks can sometimes be rewarding but the best scenario in every battle is to study the enemy patterns first before launching your own attacks. Spamming attacks can make you vulnerable to sudden counterattacks which can be fatal!

Parry Enemy Attacks

The trick to successfully parrying the enemy's attack is to parry before the attack hits.

Learn Enemy Attack Patterns

By learning attack patterns, it will give you an idea of the timing of the attacks. With this knowledge, it will be easier for you to dodge or parry attacks.

Use Wizardry Spells

Don't sleep on spells while in combat. There are several spells like buffs that can heal you for some damage you deal or offensive spells that can even be chained to your combos! Offensive magic can also shrink the enemy's spirit gauge so use this especially agains tougher enemies if simply using martial arts or spirit attacks isn't enough to put them in a vulnerable state.

Use Martial Arts to Inflict High Spirit Damage

If the opportunity presents itself, use high damaging martial arts against enemies that have just used an attack that leaves them vulnerable. These martial arts can deal more spirit damage than a regular spirit attack but requires more wind up so it is best to not use martial arts too much unless the opportunity presents itself but be mindful of it being under your arsenal of options.

Use Martial Arts with High Range in Groups

Marital Arts that covers a wide area is useful while surrounded by enemies. This is especially great against low Morale enemies as it can allow you to clear the whole group with minimal effort.

Prioritize Raising Morale

Make sure to increase your Morale! Morale increases the damage you can deal to enemies with lower Morale than you and this can greatly reduce the difficulty of fighting certain enemies in every stage!

Level Up Your Character

An obvious but sometimes forgotten aspect of some action games are making your main character stronger. While it is possible to perfectly parry every enemy attacks in the game, leveling your character will make the game much easier and may allow you to survive more attacks or deal more damage to your enemies!

How to Level Up Fast

Upgrade Equipment

Upgrading your equipment is not immediately available in the game. You can encounter the Blacksmith Zhu Xia during part 2 but only becomes permanently available during part 3 and onwards! You can use upgrading materials to strengthen your current equipment and make battling enemies easier!

Manage Your Armor Weight

Sometimes, it may not be the damage that's the problem nor your character's level. It can be an issue of mobility. Having a higher agility rate means you can easily space against enemies and avoid enemy attacks at the expense of taking higher damage due to lower defenses or vice versa. Switch up your armor and find the playstyle that you prefer!
