Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is a sequel to Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle released in 2017 but is yet to be confirmed if it takes place after the events of the first game.
However, it can be speculated that it potentially picks up after the events of the first game seeing that the trailer opens with the main characters at Princess Peach's castle as they meet Starburst, one of the many Sparks they will save throughout this new adventure.
With the first game giving focus to locations similar to Super Mario worlds like Lava Pit, which draws inspiration from Bowser's Castle, Sparks of Hope aims to take players to different kinds of worlds and locations as the game places a heavy emphasis on space travel.
Despite Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope being a sequel, there is no need to play the first game as both of the games can be enjoyed on their own, with each having self-contained stories.
However, playing the first game can be of great help in order to familiarize players with the game's mechanics as well as pick up minor nods and references that might arise from the sequel.

Six of the main playable Heroes from Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle return, namely Mario, Luigi, Princes Peach, and their respective Rabbid counterparts.
All New and Returning Features
Beep-0, one of the main characters that made its debut in the first game joins Mario and friends once more for Sparks of Hope.
While unconfirmed, it is speculated that Beep-0 may play an integral part as to knowing whether or not Sparks of Hope is directly connected with Kingdom Battle in terms of story.

Though one of the main playable Heroes in the previous game, Yoshi is not part of the initial roster for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope.
It is speculated, however, that Yoshi can find its way to the sequel through DLCs.
