Use Esuna on Status Ailments

Malboro uses attacks that inflict various status ailments, but sinc eyou can't use items for this fight, you should make sure your party is equipped with the Cleansing Materia for access to Esuna. There are also accessories to shield you from status ailments as well as linking the Subversion and Warding materias on your armor.

Hit Its Mouth to Stagger It

When Malboro opens its mouth to use Bad Breath or Test Bite, its mouth becomes targettable. If you attack its mouth with magic it will stagger quicker, especially with its weakness, Lightning.

Save Your Allies from Test Bite

Malboro will occasionally use Test Bite and swallow up its target, binding them. If you deal enough damage while it's chewing on your party member you'll be able to rescue them, so use your strongest abilities here.

Keep Your Distance During Bad Breath

Malboro are known in the Final Fantasy series for their signature move, Bad Breath. Getting hit by this attack will inflict you with poison, sleep, silence, and toad, so if you're unlucky have an unafflicted party member cast Esuna and resume the fight. Bad Breath has a wide range so you'll want to either get behind it or far away to protect yourself.

If you bring the Enemy Skill materia to this fight, getting hit by Bad Breath will teach you the Enemy Skill as well.
