A Fury from the Sea Walkthrough

No. Objectives Guide
1 Travel to the forward camp Sail to Finnr's forward camp in the northeast coast of East Anglia.
2 Speak to Finnr Finnr is located on a cliff overlooking the camp.
Speak to him to initiate the assault on Burgh Castle.
3 Crash into Burgh Castle The assault starts with Finnr's longship acting as a battering ram for Burgh Castle's sea gate.
TIPS:
Keep an eye out for volleys of flaming arrows fired from Burgh Castle. Bracing for impact will protect you and the longship from any damage.
You can eat your rations inside the longship if you take damage.
4 Break through the gates of Brugh Castle Push deeper into Burgh Castle and break through the gates using the battering ram.
TIPS:
Be mindful of red circles on the ground. Brace for impact or stay away from the battering ram if necessary.
Destroy defensive fortifications (burning oil, ballistae, and archer platforms) along the walls by shooting the oil jars near them.
Disable ballistae along the walls by shooting their weak spots (highlighted red).
5 Defeat Rued Breach the final gate to trigger a cutscene.
Fight your way through and climb the wall to defeat Rued.

A Fury from the Sea: How to Beat Rued

A Fury from the Sea - Rued Boss Fight Strategies.png

Facing Rued Head-On

  • Eliminate Rued's Rabid Wolf. This will make the fight a lot easier.
  • Rued occassionally performs a jab with his Great Sword's pommel to throw you off balance. Anticipate this throughout the fight.
  • Be wary of Rued's bolases. He occassionally throws these to knock players off their feet.
  • Rued can engulf his Great Sword with flame! Perform a dodge roll whenever you are set on fire to stop the burning damage.
  • Rued can heal when his health is low. Utilize this opening by performing heavy attacks or high-damage dealing abilities.

Stealth Attacking Rued

IMPORTANT:
This method requires the Advanced Assassination skill to pull off properly.
Performing an Advanced Assassination on Rued will NOT outright kill him.
Rued will only be in a downed state, essentially bypassing the entire boss fight.
Eliminate all enemies in the way.
Use the lift beside the wall.
Climb further up and enter the tower.
Follow the ropes to the be positioned on top of the boss area.
Rued will be directly below the rope outside.
Get in range and perform an Advanced Assassination.
Rued will be in a downed state after a successful assassination.
Finish the fight by eliminating his Rabid Wolf.

A Fury from the Sea: Kill or Spare Rued?

WARNING:
This section contains major spoilers about the ending of The Tale of Thegn Oswald story arc. Read on if you do NOT mind spoilers.

Killing Rued results in a smooth wedding ceremony for Oswald and Valdis during the Wedding Horns quest.

Sparing Rued results in a different scenario for the Wedding Horns quest. Rued eventually crashes the celebration and challenges Oswald to a holmgang to the death. You can choose to either let Oswald fight or fight for him.

It is also important to note that Finnr may move to your settlement as a Jomsviking depending on your decisions from this point onward.

He will join the Raven Clan if you decide to either kill Rued now or fight for Oswald when Rued crashes the wedding celebration during the Wedding Horns quest.
