| The Divine Beast Xuanwu is one of the Four Gods and the guardian of the north. In the Five Phases theory, this part-tortoise, part-snake creature is associated with the Water Phase and is said to rule over winter. Part of the Xuanwu legend is derived from Xuan Ming, an assistant spirit to Zhuan Xu of the Five Emperors, ruler of the north and of water. It is also linked to the ancient Huaxia tribes' beliefs, in which the longevity of tortoises and snakes led to them being revered as symbols of prosperity for generations. From the Qin period onward, these beliefs were incorporated into the development of the Yin-Yang Five Phases system, and by the Han period, Xuanwu had become what it is today. |
